I'd forgotten how good the guitars are in this song.

This song and album will always remind me of the summer of 1985, being a teenager with my life still in front of me and not a care in the world.

This song always takes me to another place and time... It's hypnotic.

The line, “so sad they had to fade it” was literally about the radio edit of their song Shout, which they wanted to go on for longer.

The lead singers, Roland Orzabal & Kurt Smith were childhood friends from school and grew up in Bath, England. They both shared an interest in music and could both sing, they were both members of their first band, 'Graduate', however they disolved that band and created Tears for Fears in 1981.
They have remarkably similar voices which leads many people to think they may have been related, but they were not.

Resides on the shortlist od iconic 80's songs.  Never gets old.

First scene is from the SoCal high desert.  Who hasn't gotten gas at the dinosaur on the way to Palm Springs?

This is a great song, I could never get tired of this song. Its like getting tired of pizza

Please remember, the music video, was in its infancy, and a new art form. As teens in the 80s we had radio, no other medium, and top 40 , the format was top 30 songs, plus 10 previous years hits..on repeat. Tears for r Fears when their sound came on in the mix, it' was so unique, and an iconic early 80s tune. But the video back then  , well, up to interpretation..
Some videos , well ..😂❤

Shout/The Working Hour/Sowing the Seeds of Love/Woman in Chains

Although I can't remember when I first heard this song, I can remember thinking then, just how FASCINATING it was.!!!   The melody seemed to cast a spell over me.!!!  Now, many years later, I am SO GLAD to hear this song again.  I LOVE IT SO MUCH.!!!  I think it sounds very unusual, even MAJICAL, or OTHER-WORLDLY, perhaps.!!!  I find it SO HARD to express my feelings for this song in simple words.

Their song "Shout" was a very big hit too, and probably my favorite of theirs.

Legends with a deep catalogue of iconic songs.

THIS IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER!  SOME SONGS HAVE A TIMELESS RELEVANCE,  THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SONGS!!!!💙💙💙

Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal both were "oursiders" who befriended each other in school. They wrote great songs together, each singing on the songs they wrote. Like chocolate and peanut butter, some people prefer one over the other. They had a falling out and the group broke up for a while, but re-united in the early 2000's. Juat a great, great band.
Listen to Mad World, Pale Shelter, Broken, Woman in Chains, and so many others.

so curt smith and his daughter, diva, released an acoustic duet of “mad world”. it’s absolutely marvelous.

"Even while we sleep, we will find you."
This song is way too fun for what they're actually talking about.

What's important about this song is that there are 3 to 4 important themes/messages baked into the lyrics that are pretty deep.  (1) First, this was released in 1985 in the middle of the Cold War where the US and the World were always at the edge of a nuclear war.  When he says "There's a room where the light won't find you,:" he is referring to the initial light of a nuclear explosion, and if you are inside building or structure, you might be protected from the radioactive flash and survive, but then he says "Holding hands as the walls come tumbling down, when they do, I'll be right behind you" (until your death).  (2) This a song of political and global power, personal power, and ruling/dominating in relationship power dynamics to rule your little personal world.  (3) He says "I can't stand this indecision married with a lack of vision, everybody wants to rule the world," because your life is focused on /ruled by your spouse's vision and goals ruling your life.  (4) In the beginning of the song, he says:  "Welcome to your life, there's no turning back.  Even while you sleep, we will find you acting on your best behavior turn your back on mother nature, everybody wants to rule the World" (their world and environment").  Every daily decision you make in your life will decide your future.  Then he says regarding his life:  "It's my own design -- it's my own remorse" (you make the decisions that forms your life's path, and when you use your life freedom in bad ways you may have remorse.  "Help me to decide, help me make the most of freedom and of pleasure nothing ever last forever...."  Pleasure is what makes you happy, and YOUR pleasure can conflict with other people, society norms, and the environment. Exercising your pleasure depends on the amount of FREEDOM you have. For your own pleasure, you may desecrate the environment to satisfy your own selfish needs. Why?  Because you have the freedom to do so -- freedom and pleasure is a balance. This may also lead to remorse. You basically want to dominate and rule your environment like other countries dream of dominating the world which could lead to a nuclear war.

So nostalgic its complicated

Pale Shelter is one of their best. Sums up their attitude well - they were teenage friends who had unhappy childhoods. Orzabal, in particular, often sang with a heavy undercurrent of anger (which can be seen on his face in some of the videos).
