The song is saying that he's got his friend's back, regardless of situations. It's not sad, it's saying hang on, I'm here for you. It's supplying hope for someone who thinks everyone's gone.

I've known this song since it came out. I was only 9, but I had 5 older siblings who listened to Simon and Garfunkel. I don't see the song as sad, per se. I see it as a song of support, friendship and encouragement.

Glad you took the chance on a song like this.   The lyrics hit hard for anyone who had ever cared for someone.   Thanks for checking it out.

First, I think the music alone is award worthy without any vocals.  However, Art Garfunkel has the most beautiful voice ever.  This song has always felt comforting and hopeful to me.  Not sad at all.  'If you need a friend, I'm sailing right behind".  Just beautiful.

One of the greatest songs ever wriiten.

It's not sad. It's moving.

A song of love and support that has and will stand  the test of time. The orchestration is stellar

Awwwww so glad you liked this.

A few years after this song came out we found out that my mother had cancer. She lost her right leg just below the knee and a part of her right lung. This song helped her through her surgeries as well as her chemo and radiation treatments. This was also the last song mum listened to before she died the following morning, May 13th 1980, 6:34 am. I was 18, this was the song I turned to whenever I needed a little extra support and it's a painful but wonderful way to always stay connected to mum, my best friend. I'm so glad I came across your channel, thank you so much for playing this, it means more to me than you will ever know.   🙏🙏🙏

Art Garfunkel has the voice of angel. And this was decades before auto-tune. Just pure talent!

This is about getting out of the trough and back to the crest with the help of a loved one

thanks for your honesty; I appreciate it

When Paul Simon 1st wrote this song it was only 2 verses & a little hymn like song. While recording the song their producer & Art thought the song should be bigger & longer.  Paul wrote the 3rd verse in the studio.  It was about his wife Peggy finding a couple of grey hairs, she was in her late 20's,  Paul teased her calling her silver girl. The tall man  Art is the lead singer, Paul  comes in on harmony on the 3rd verse. They were 28 years old when they recorded the album. This song #1 song of 1970. The album #1 album of 1970. Song & album won 5 Grammys at the 1971 Grammys. Paul & Art started singing together at 13 years old, 1st signed at 15 years old recorded several singles while in High School. They got signed by Columbia Records in their early 20's. They are the #3 harmonic duo, they have 7 Grammys,  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, & sold over 100 million records. They both will be 85 years old in a couple of months.

The drums in the background signifies the storm coming and then fading away

Prob the most beautiful song ever😊

This song was helpful to soldiers coming back from Vietnam.

Some people make fun of Art Garfunkel.. they don't in this song. He owns this one.

If you don’t have that friend, or are not that friend, you are missing something.

OMG. This was the first orchestral  song I ever played in public. Lol awesome song

Don't forget about pianist Larry Knechtel, member of the famous "Wrecking Crew!"

One of my all time faves. I am glad that you were able to listen and appreciate this beautiful song. Thank you for having an open mind for "new" and different music. There is 'TONS" of great music out there for you to find. Have Fun!
