This is the truest form of hands-on art. It is both masterful and underappreciated, especially in the current era. It makes me happy to see that you are treating Wildwood as an event and as cinema with its older age rating, and not presenting it solely as an animated film. Animation is cinema, and what you're doing can help break that stigma. Can't wait to see this in cinemas.

What an incredible job by Steve walking us through Laika's VFX process as well. Not only a master of his craft but also a great interviewer/host

Man it's really fun hearing about the behind the scenes in how they crafted some of the creatures, shots, etc etc. Like the whole part about the ocean and waves for Kubo. Oh and learning they used cheesecloth for Boxtrolls and wood block texturing for Kubo, man that's just a crazy level and so entertaining. Like in some ways, totally unnecessary, but just an interesting bit of what can be put into a film, especially by the team at Laika. Can't wait to see Wildwood, been looking forward to it.

This series of conversations is awesome! I just wish i'd seen something like this about 40 years ago as a teenager. Then i might not be struck doing boring, soul destroying construction design. I had no idea creative industries like this even existed! Art departments in schools should be showing these sorts of films to their students. It would have been so inspiring to me as a kid to have seen this sort of thing. Awesome stuff laika, many thanks.

Just watched Kubo again showed it to someone new and they didn’t believe it was stop motion a few times 😂

I think Laika uses just too much CGI. I went to see Pressure with a friend on Tuesday and the Wildwood trailer played before. I asked him how he thought it was made and he said “Computer animation” almost puzzled by the question, as if I’d asked how Toy Story was done. He was astounded when I told him most of it was stop-frame. I mean on one hand, if the film exists to tell a story and entertain then maybe the makers don’t care how the audience views the technicalities. But I think if you’re going to all the trouble of stop-frame then it should look like stop-frame. I’d happily lose some slickness and accept a few rough edges.
