I read the books. I am very ok with what PJ did in the movie. It is more decisive and i prefer the shire to be left alone.

I can't imagine that the Valar would be kind to Saruman when he showed up in the Havens.

The scouring of the Shire explains Samswise's motivation and resilience to the ring.
Samwise is given a vision of the scouring of the Shire.  His strongest desire from then on out is to return home to stop it.  That drives him towards mount doom. He just wants to help Frodo finish this "ring business" so he can get back on home.  He never loses sight of home, unlike Frodo who begins to forget.
All this makes Samwise very resilient to the rings corruption.
Well think about it.  It really only has one sales pitch and it's a hard sell,. "use me to save the Shire!" It's a hard sell because Samwise blames the stupid ring for messing everything up in the first place. I'm sure with enough time the ring would eventually corrupt his reasoning but it's definitely a hard sell, (unlike Boromir and Denethar). This makes Samwise the perfect companion  for Frodo, better than any other character. Without the scouring of the Shire and his knowledge of it, a lot of his strength doesn't make sense.

I would have liked to have seen the Scouring of the Shire and Saruman's fate as it was presented in the novel, but I can understand why this was omitted for the film. The threat of Sauron had ended and the hobbits coming home from their great victory only to find the home they had fought so long to protect in ruins and to help drive out essentially this now minor evil wouldn't translate well to film. I understand the importance of the chapter as well as a reflection of Tolkien's experiences in returning from the war only to find the home he had left to protect vastly changed, but again I don't think it would have translated well to film and would ultimately just make things unnecessary long.

So Saruman still died from a knife attack. It's honestly a bit underwhelming that a half-god could die so easily.

I like the fact the shire was almost oblivious and untouched by the war of the ring, it emphasised the fact that the four hobbits went on this immense journey, fought for their beloved home and pretty much saved everyone and none of the hobbits knew what had happened or knew to thank them. The hobbits wanted it to be just the way it was, peaceful and oblivious to the evil that had happened. And I think PJ wanted this too.

Also to me the the scouring of the shire takes away the importance of the quest, it is what would of happened should they have failed, so it happening after they succeeded was rather unnecessary. Plus I prefer the deleted orthanc scene!

The Shire being untouched allows for that amazing scene in the Green Dragon. I'm ok with it.

The only way I can PJ follow the book in this topic would be to have a 4th movie that can cover the scourcing of The Shire and maybe a bit more at what happened in Gondor and Rohan after Eomer and Aragorn become kings of their realms

Saruman’s death is sort of sad.  He was looking for permission to come home and was told to fuck off.

The book version was far superior. To see Saruman's death rushed like this felt pretty unsatisfying. I can see why the films did it this way because of how long the extra screen time would be for the true ending but yeah, it didn't do it for me.

The books ending is absolutely crucial for the story and changing it alters the message significantly. The books ending shows, that the shire was not a safe spot, untouched by the evils in the rest of the world. It was quite the opposite: a fragile place you have to defend and maintain. And secondly, it shows that the hobbits grew immensely and can now overcome hostile armys of much bigger and stronger enemies than themselves even unguided and without help. This is maybe the essential message of the whole trilogy.

Galadriel's mirror shows Frodo a snippet of the Scouring of the Shire in the film; the shire covered in smog and the Hobbits in chains going into a mill-like building under the command of orcs. But in the film this never happens.

The Scouring of the Shire is an essential theme of the story, just as important as many of the other great themes. The theme is simple: the war often comes home. Even if the war is fought far away, the soldiers that fight it often find home isn't how they left it. Unscrupulous people take power, corrupt agents at home look eerily similar to nefarious actors on the front, and the war machine has stripped away the innocence of the peaceful lands before the war. It is just as important for the Hobbits to root out corruption at home as it was for them to destroy the Ring and fight Sauron. It also shows how much they've grown in comparison to their peers. They alone have the resolve to lead the fight against the rogues, traitors, and criminals who've taken power in their absence. They are the veterans from the front - they understand what's at stake more than their fellow Hobbits.

When Tolkien was writing his sequel trilogy before he stopped he talked about a new shadow rising a dark tree, and an evil cult of black Gondorians.

My thoughts are that when he was writing this new series Tolkien was going to make the big bad Saruman because he was on of the Maiar and a ring maker, and could not be killed by simple means. His spirit would flee to the East and regain his strength and later get his revenge on the world of men more specifically the heirs of Gondor.

I bet he would use his powers of manipulation to sway the lesser of men to be part of a cult worshipping him in the Incarnation of a black tree. Since the days of the great struggle against the shadow was over and Gondor was now rich and fat as it used to be from the years of peace, where orcs are no more relevant save for stories and childish games.

The people of Gondor would be ignorant to the struggles and evils that took place long ago traditions and values forgotten. Both pride and dignity lost, from this climate new evils would rise and older forces awakened.

Tolkien loved his cyclical history of constant lesser repetitions.
Melkor the first dark lord waged war against Eru, in which Saroyan was but his highest Lieutenant, when he was gone Saroun became the dark lord and forged the rings.

Then Saruman who was sent to destroy Saroun goes in league with him to garunte his position in the new order, while searching for the ring for his own means to rule. Saroun was destroyed, while Saruman was defeated his spirit lives on he will become the new dark lord, and I’m sure that Tolkien planned on having some King in the North or cult leader be his lieutenant until his death.

And it continues until the now, that was how Tolkien wrote, for he often spoke of the Rangers who kept the ignorant North safe and happy from evils that would freeze there hearts. And talk about great kings and countries lost, and that would have filled the new shadow series, I wish he made it, or C.T publish it, but all I can do is speculate because I’m waiting for The winds of Winter.
