Although Ah-Wing is good friends with Ka-Bo and Ka-Fai, he never wants them to know his true family situation. He comes from a poor family; his mother works as a cleaner, and the family's financial pressure forces him to face reality earlier than his peers. Yet, his strong pride leads him to pretend to be on the same social class as his friends. To help support his family, he takes cleaning jobs during holidays, only to be caught by Ka-Bo's family. What was initially just a difference between rich and poor gradually becomes a rift in their friendship due to the pride, sensitivity, and misunderstandings of the young people. The truly poignant aspect of The Unemployed is that these teenagers, without any ill intentions, discover for the first time as they grow up that while friendship is pure, reality is not always fair.
