Thanks! I had not known that when the Bremen continued on to New York, that the captain had been ostensibly disobeying orders to deliver his passengers to safety in the US before the whole drama with the Bremen's run for the Axis afterward. My respect for him skyrocketed after learning that.

Great vid. Excellent book "Shadow Voyage" on this. Ironical that Bremen survived all this only to be burned and destroyed by an angry 14yo crew boy just 16 months later.

When I just a little kid I got to go aboard the Bremen’s sister ship Europa after Europa was re named Liberte by the French Line. Europa was awarded to France as a war prize. I think it was about 1959. I would have been 11 years old at the time but I still remember much about it.

Meine Großeltern fuhren mit der Bremen 1939, vor Ausbruch des 2.ten WK, von Bremen nach N.Y./USA und mit der Deutschland zurück. Meine Mutter war auch dabei, denn sie erzählte von der Fahrt über den Atlantik. Ein Rechtsanwalt aus N.Y. bestätigte mir einmal diese Fahrt, über die "Passenger List", die es bis heute in den USA noch gibt. Besonders beeindruckt hatte meine Mutter das "Zeitungs-Lesen" auf einer Hauswand am "Time Square" in New York, wo stand, das A. H. Polen überfallen hatte und somit der 2.te WK begonnen hatte. So etwas vergisst man nicht !

My parents went to Germany on the Bremer in 1937. They never talked about extra German military. My dad did get in trouble in a coffee shop on the street laughing at the brown shirt youth group during a parade. He and my mom were quickly ushered away. Nice coverage. Never thought much about the liner that they went on. It was probably cheap as my parents had to be.

Having studied old liners for years with an extensive library on them along with a collection of over 500 menus from them, I appreciate your channel and videos. Too many out there have no idea how much the liners contributed to U S and world history.

13:00 I didnt know they had ever made auxiliary cruisers out of passenger liners. I knew they had converted cargo ships (Atlantis, Pinguin, Stier etc).
