Ah yes, I see you realized it at the end, but Xixi is the one who is currently blond!
Xixi’s nickname comes from his stage name He Changxi, and Zhaozhao’s nickname comes from his name He Yanzhao (sometimes people assume it’s “Chao” because the character “Zhao” in his name can also be read as “Chao,” but Zhaozhao himself has clarified it is in fact “Zhao”).
I’ve mentioned this in a different video but doubling up a character in Chinese is a cutesy way of saying something, and for names it becomes a cutesy nickname. That’s why when you read danmei and you see something like I Ship My Rival x Me (which has been announced to also get an uncensored cdrama adaptation eventually) where the male lead Gu Yiliang calls the main character Wei Yanzi “Yanyan,” it’s kind of a cringey but cute nickname and shows how sickeningly in love the ship in that danmei is. 😂
Even cringier but also cute is Jian Suiying calling Li Yu “Xiao Yuyu” in Yet You’re in Love With an Idiot aka My Beloved Fool, because he both doubles up one of the characters in Li Yu’s name and adds “Xiao” (小, meaning “Little”) in front, another common way to form a nickname, making it double the cringey sweetness (this danmei novel and manhua actually recently got adapted into a Thai drama called Fool in Love, since the series the novel is from, known as the 188男团, is collaborating with Thailand to adapt some of the novels under the Chinese company iQIYI. It even has a Chinese dub!).
So to sum up—basically the main ways Chinese nicknames are formed are these (not counting nicknaming someone after something else, like how Elio is nicknamed “Lü Xiaobei” by Ayden which is a reference to him reminding fans of pork floss, but has nothing to do with Elio’s name):
- adding “A-” (阿) in front of a character, like Wei Wuxian becoming “A-Xian” or Wen Yuan becoming “A-Yuan,” as seen in Mo Dao Zu Shi.
- as mentioned, adding “Xiao” (“little”) in front, as seen with Li Tianxi from Link Click (not a danmei, but close) being called “Xiao Xi” by her brother Li Tianchen.
- adding “-er” (儿) at the end, usually done by an elder to a younger person, but not always! Eg from what I know, Ollie from the ship Tianyuan often calls his partner Shuyuan “Shu-er,” despite Ollie being the younger one.
- doubling up one character of the name, which Xixi and Zhaozhao do for each other, and their fans do for them as well. In this case, Xixi is pronounced “She-She,” and Zhaozhao is pronounced something like “Jiao-Jiao” (the “zh,” “ch,” “sh” sounds are often hard for English speakers to replicate, so this is the closest approximation). Technically both characters of the doubled characters should be pronounced. ^^
(This is because you don’t usually pronounce singular characters for Chinese names, so any Chinese name that does have only one character in it, like Wang Yi from I Have to Be a Great Villain, should always include his surname Wang if you want to call his name. You can’t call him just “Yi,” but you can call him “Xiao Yi,” “Yiyi,” or “A-Yi” (although this third option is a bit weird for this name since it would sound to close to “a-yi,” meaning “auntie). And for two character names, you can call them by just their name without the surname, as fans do with Li Shuyuan from the ship Tianyuan, but it implies a level of closeness.)
Also on the doubling up thing being cutesy and thus kind of cringey, this is why most Chinese kids are taught to say “Gege” and “Jiejie” to youths older than them growing up (as they mean “big brother” and “big sister” but doesn’t have to be used for family, the same way these terms are used in much of Asia), but they usually grow out of it and adopt “Ge” and “Jie” later. So if you call someone unrelated to you “Gege” or “Jiejie” when you’re older, it will come across as kind of cutesy and/or flirty. This is also why in streams like the music practice stream, when Zhaozhao is tasked with calling Xixi “Gege,” he gets embarrassed and they both burst out laughing.
And speaking of their music practice stream!: because I am a stickler for details and very picky about grammar and writing, I am also going to report that there’s a few mistranslations in the clip at 4:33. 😅
It’s not a huge deal, but the conversation actually goes something like this!:
Their manager, who they call “Qiuqiu-jie” (literally “Big Sister Please-Please,” because she’s always going 🙏 begging them to behave on-stream 😂): “Would you accept your partner sending someone else home?”
Zhaozhao, thinking: “Eh” (like the video’s caption says, this “eh” can be read as him saying “wait” as he thinks of something).
Xixi: “I can’t accept it. This is something that I can’t accept. Is it you sending someone else home or someone else sending you home?”
Xixi: “You better not send others home alone. Not even friends.”
Zhaozhao: “I won’t. Because I—”
Xixi, joking and teasing: “Because you don’t have [many] friends?”
Zhaozhao: “No, I mean because I don’t even drink!” 😅
Xixi: “Oh yes, he doesn’t drink.”
Additional Context Missing from the Edit:
When Xixi first says he can’t accept Zhaozhao sending someone home, Zhaozhao suggested maybe this depends since they may have to send friends home, particularly after drinking.
Xixi very brutally asked, “Can’t friends go home on their own?” (it got to a point one of his friends, who hosted a solo endorsement stream with Xixi, posted after the stream that he wasn’t drunk and thus didn’t need anyone to send him home 😂).
When drinking was brought up, Xixi also said he wouldn’t allow his friends to get to the point of being too drunk, implying they wouldn’t need anyone to send them home that way. He joked he’d just get too drunk himself (a reference to the time he got drunk on Xizhao’s karaoke stream and Zhaozhao had his hands full dealing with an unfiltered Xixi). Xixi was reminded not to mention alcohol too explicitly and amended his words while laughing.
But Zhaozhao said in such a situation, maybe he should allow friends to send Xixi home if he’s too drunk, and Xixi immediately asked why. Zhaozhao said he should allow it in case he isn’t there, but Xixi said, “Why wouldn’t you be there? I wouldn’t go [drinking] if you weren’t there.”
Zhaozhao seemed pleasantly surprised and touched, even asking “Really?” And when Xixi said yes, Zhaozhao said it better be true—as seen with their hot pot stream, Zhaozhao is not a fan of letting Xixi drink too much (he glowered at Xixi when he tried drinking in that stream until Xixi put the alcohol down), all because of his experiences in the karaoke stream. 🤣
And then after the exchange in the video happened where Zhaozhao mentioned he doesn’t usually drink, he said when he and Xixi go out with friends, it’s mostly the friends drinking lol.
And the video also doesn’t show this part, but as I said in a different video, Zhaozhao is just as possessive of Xixi! Besides not allowing Xixi to show off his abs now, in the same stream as the one they discuss whether they’d be okay with the other sending someone else home, Zhaozhao reacts very negatively to the idea of Xixi watching a movie with someone else.
When Xixi says Zhaozhao often watches movies alone, Zhaozhao says, “Even if I watch it by myself, I won’t watch it with someone else.” That’s when Xixi dares joke that he’ll watch with someone else in that case, and you can see Zhaozhao’s smile immediately drop SLFJSKS. Xixi quickly says he’s joking before blowing Zhaozhao an air kiss an then cringing at himself doing that, getting out of frame while laughing—and Zhaozhao follows, with them doing who knows what lol.
When Xixi comes back, he even as to take a moment and tells Qiuqiu-jie to pause before the next question because that whole incident made him blush too much. 😂
Xizhao are truly obsessed with each other ahahaha.
But yeah, just some more context for you! Hope it’s insightful. 🥰

Can you also react to Ollie and Shuyuan, collectively known as TianYuan (Tian for Tianyue which is Ollie and Yuan for Shuyuan). They are the leads of Deep in, a Chinese BL show. Hope you can also check out that show if you haven't yet. Thank you!
