My 2005 CRV had a compressor failure and a trusted shop said ~$4000 for the same thing...I knew it failed and about "black death", so I ask them if they saw signs of contamination. They said no so I went on Youtube and learned how to do it myself...replaced the condenser and compressor and bought gauges and vacuum pump from Harbor Freight...it was a pain in the butt but after a day of labor on my part and recharging, it has been perfect for going on 2 years...and it cost me ~$600 in parts and ~$100 in tools (gauges / pump)... being cheap has its rewards.

well they are not called stealerships for no reason LOL

@Chevy3278 10 months ago (edited)

they were hoping she would trade it in on a new car, and give her a grand for it

My Acura did the same thing 2 years ago. I replaced the compressor with a $200 denso unit, $14 in r134 refrigerant and 2 years later it still blows cold. NEVER go to the dealer for work.......ever unless it's for free and even still think about it 3 times.

no pride in the dealership mechanics . I couldn't sleep at night if I left 6 plastic pins out right in front of my eyes ,shame on them .I am a 73 year old mechanic and not that blind . lol😎

I have a 2015 350rx and a trusted mechanic. I would never go to lexus for repairs! Dealerships will absolutely take advantage of you.

That dealer is despicable. I too had been scammed by the dealers. Since then I learned to do service or repair myself. YT is the best place to learn.

They were replacing my compressor on my 2018 civic sport hatchback under warranty and they called to say it looks like my belt should be replaced an they can do it for 300$ i said the belt you already have off and have to put back on to finish the job lol. Why wouldn't you just charge me the price of the belt itself unless the belt is 300$ lmfao. The service guy legitimately was at a lose of words 😂

Nothing to do with the video but a funny story.
My grandparents moved from Dayton Ohio to Mesa Arizona in the mid 1950's. Of course it is very hot in the summer. So, they see everyone driving around with their windows up and wonder why. They assume that that is the way to keep cooler, so they drive with their windows up too. Very soon they find out that the people driving with their windows up have air conditioning in their cars.

For $325 dollars that has to be one fancy high tech serpentine belt

My Accord touring had this issue and was quoted over $3k by local Honda dealer to get compressor, condenser and a few other parts replaced, then I talked to a guy who worked as a Honda mechanic and now retired. He said, Before you spend a dime on it, try these few things out first: Unclog the dryer drain, Check for blown fuses, Check for A/C relay, if you don't hear the compressor engage, which I didn't at the time, so I ordered a new relay from Amazon, (2 in one package) OMRON G8HL-H71 and watched a YT video on how to replace it, Takes like 2 minutes, As soon as I installed the new relay, My compressor kicked in and the A/C started blowing cold.

My wife has a 2018 CRV that we received a recall notice from Honda indicating a potential compressor failure due to a seal on the compressor. The a/c is still working OK so we did not take any action. But Honda made it clear that they have had problems with the seal on the compressor.

07 civic got oil changes at dealer in past. every time I was presented a huge list of repairs needed. always laughed and took to my normal mechanic for anything they listed and most was never needed. prices were absurd...600 to change spark plugs - 20 minute job with no special tools. would never go to dealer for anything.

Sir, I am just baffled that a trusted brand like Honda with less than 70k had a catastrophic failure like this example. I was in a culture shock when I spent close to 8k fixing my 2013 Honda pilot which had a major forward camshaft failure. The camshaft failed to the point which ended up shaving down the sensor. Not to mention an alternator that I am about to replace tomorrow due to the spool valve oil leak. I have a 2007 Honda accord V6 which in my humble opinion was built a lot better than today's Hondas. I have been driving Hondas for over 22 years and I could definitely tell that they don't make them like they used to😞. Very informative video. Your videos have always been great. Keep up the great work Big dog.

Never go to stealer ship. One of friend's 2000 Honda Civic only 4800 miles already has AC problem. Dealer said just out of the warranty and quote for $3900 to fix. I replace a compressor and condersor kit for under $1500 only took few hours.

@jrsanti 10 months ago

Honda had recalled their compressor and extended the warranty to 10 yrs.

Dealerships over quote on repairs when they don't want to work on a vehicle.

My wife got a quote for $2k from a local shop to replace the compressor. She had around 300k on her '09 Civic that was in great shape otherwise but opted not to do so. She bought a 2019 1.5 l turbo Civic instead due to her comfort level on her 1 hr, one-way twice every day commute to work. I adopted the '09, did some research and decided to change out the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion valve with aftermarket parts from RockAuto. No issues after 2-1/2 years and over 9k miles later. Minor fitment problem with bottom of condenser coil assembly not aligning properly with the radiator frame sockets overcome by adding additional rubber grommets. Additionally, I covered the fresh air inlet port in the firewall with a plastic coated metal mesh letter tray to prevent rodent traffic into to cabin. This was one of the rare occasions I don't go full on OE. That along with your mentioning of unacceptably early factory compressor failure which was also common back in 2009.
