one of the only absolutes in music production is people will never like the tracks you spent months on and are the most proud of, but will absolutely adore the ones you nonchalantly slapped together in a couple hours

Instructions unclear. I just aged 10 years

to generate track in 30 min you have to have enough skills /masterpiece and have to catch this special flow state, which you cannot reach until you spend many hours trying

“Perfect” is the enemy of the Good. - Voltaire

Facts about just shipping your tracks. A friend told me "finished is better than perfect" and it's so true.

I had to be talked into sending my very first track to a demo night in front of some big name bookers in my city. Now it's being played out by some of them. If you're putting in the work, you're probably better than you think.

Jokes on you, I already wasted 15.

Making music that will be used for atmosphere for a voice over (radio ad, online ad or for a podcast) helped me learn how to make more tamed music and most of my music is drums , bass, chords, a melody and random ear candy … and most of them are like 5-6 tracks

I started 3 months ago with zero musical knowledge. I jumped in it because music has always been an escape route from reality for me. Most of what I've focused on has been music shorts for like fb/Instagram reels, non royalty music for YouTube library. I've mostly found that stuff you spend maybe an hour or so on, is more liked than what you've spent days or weeks on. I've found personally for me, the faster I create something spontaneous on the spot, the more catchy and melodic it becomes and is more shared or used. Not everyone is gonna like everything you make. What matters is the few that stick around for the vibe your music brings to them.

I want to eventually crossover into film industry, making sounds for films, which is why I've heavily focused on short, instantaneous clips, chops, and samples that focus on loops.

Another thing people new also struggle with is sound selection. My advice for that as a newbie, don't be too selective. Scroll through a few in your daw, work with the little you hear. Limited choices often can create the best  ideas when it comes to creativity. When you have too many choices, you over compare yourself and create that writers block that makes a lot of beginner producers fade out and quit.

In my experience as a music producer, artists and writers almost NEVER want the very first beat that you play them. They will nod to it and vibe with it and even tell you how great it is, but I think (subconsciously) they feel like they NEED to hear more before choosing. So now I make sure the first 2 beats will pique their interests (but I'm REALLY using those tracks to sell my brand of musicality) and then, my 3rd-5th tracks are always amazing and typically the ones I worked the longest on. I have found a great deal of success doing this.

when you realise, you know nothing about music, you can move forward making music....

this was close to therapy thanks bro

Something I rarely hear is have fun creating. Right now life is too serious not to have fun creating. Also be organized. You’ll go a long way. This is coming from someone who works in the SYNC industry.

The number one struggle I have with producing music is how i imagined it vs it's reality, awesome video man!

Music expresses the emotions and experiences beyond definition, you must live as much as you create.

Your life is the ink that fills your fountain pen of creativity, you cannot paint the silence without new experiences and imagination.

The “your taste is ahead of your skill” idea explains so much. I hear flaws in my Dunback Meadow digital assets marketplace uploads that buyers never mention.

ive been following since 2017, I met ocean 3 times in london man, the first time was 2021 in summer when i moved to london and worked in camden market as a binman trying to make a music career happen, he had his biker jacket on and was cutting through the market, he stopped to let me give him his flowers, while i had bin bags in my hand, super kind dude and real good energy, a year later i moved back to london and saw him the night i moved and the night after that consecutively on the underground with his girlfriend, every single time i ran into him i knew i was supposed to be making music and God sent him as confirmation, someone i look up to in music who was a real good dude in real life, and encouraging. They say dont meet your heroes but Ocean wil show you thats a bullshxt saying. I leveled up a lot as a songwriter and producer just studying him. Thanks for everything Ocean, and until next time whatever adventure that is

nice cool how that opportunity with guitar sample just happened organically

Im at the stage of learning the right structure - starting with less and slowly building - its a trial and error process. Thanks for this video 👍

Been into recording and producing for decades, in music since even more, and have been following you for a few years (Logic gang).
I can relate to many of those points, and it’s nice to see how far you went. It also makes me wonder what I have done all these years haha. Keep it up!
