The Historian.

Leo Tolstoy was one of the greatest writers in history, the mind behind monumental novels like War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Yet behind his literary genius was a man deeply troubled by questions about morality, faith, and the meaning of life.

In this documentary, we explore the extraordinary journey of the Russian count who became a revolutionary thinker and spiritual seeker. From aristocratic privilege to philosophical rebellion, Tolstoy’s life was as dramatic as the stories he wrote.

This is the story of Leo Tolstoy — the man who searched for the truth of human existence.

This is an incredibly detailed and profound documentary on Tolstoy’s life. I was most struck by his spiritual crisis after finishing Anna Karenina (around)

Its a real shame that there wasn't even a fleeting mention of his great novel Resurrection. A moral masterpiece.

Bothered by the discoveries of the so-called dark enlighteners of his time Tolstoy almost went to the railroad station to shoot himself. He did not want his body discovered by a servant or a family member if he killed himself at home. The night before his plan he had a dream of two long cords with cross cords connecting them. In his dream the cross cords fell away but the long cords held. He interpreted this to mean that ideologies would arise and opinions would change but reality was real and eternal and would not change or be affected. Understanding the meaning of the dream he did not kill himself. Once he understood this he likely was not tormented by ideologies or opinions. As Heraclitus has said: There is the way of truth and the way of opinion. We should not let our minds be hi-jacked or bothered by the way of opinion. It is a lesson for us today in the age of the Internet where opinions are rife and for the most part idiotic.

leo tolstoy's wife copied his book war and peace, by hand, 7 times ...
That's a good one to bring up the next time someone complains about how long the book is.
