So, just to point out but the house writers used to encourage doctors to write in with the stupidest/craziest stuff patients brought in to them for the clinic hours. So most of the clinic stuff he does is 'based on a true story' though obviously the doctor's writing in could have made it up they were going on what they gave. I'm sure if they were doing the show today they would just skim medical reddit, as it basically ended up doing the same thing.
Also, in response to Dr. Mike saying this wouldn't happen, I'm happy to remind everyone that if you ever see a warning about how not to use something on a bottle? Its because someone was in fact stupid enough to try using it that way. Likewise, there's a reason why there's pictograms on some medicine now. Yes, there are people that stupid in the world.
In regards to why House knows Mandarin, in addition to so many other languages, his father is some high-ranking official in the military and because of that his family used to always travel around the world and live in military bases. As a result of that House got to learn a lot of languages
One thing I'll say about the Elder Care segment: the primary function of a lot of those places is social. It's getting people in similar age brackets together so they can socialize, so they're not stuck with much younger relatives who don't have enough time for them, being lonely and inactive. Socialization can often be the best medicine.
When the writers for Scrubs were looking for inspiration for their first few seasons, they went around the country to various hospitals to get stories from the staff there to see what they could fit into the show. Given this was meant to be humorous, they came back with a disproportionate amount of stories of people coming into the ER with stuff shoved up their ass.
As someone who works in a care facility I absolutely get where Mouse is coming from in regards to putting a loved one in there. Honestly if you can have in home care thats the best option, but if you need to then absolutely shop around and dont just send them to a state nursing home as those tend to have the most residents and sometimes not enough staff which is where the horror stories of neglect come from. Also legit these "patients" are doing shit i would be worried about my 90 year old dementia patients doing, not functioning adults with jobs that have health benefits.
If I remember heâs good with languages because his father was a soldier who was deployed across offshore bases and took his family with him. He knows Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Yiddish and Hindi
it's cute to see both of them trying to make sense of a drama series, despite it having loosely-reality-based cases in it. LOL It doesn't help that some context of those clips gets lost in the editing for time's sake. But this is also why I love House, he's brutal but gets the job done :P
6:25 The tumor idea isn't just speculation. I knew someone that happened to. However she was 14 and from a very religious family. The swelling of the abdomen and other symptons made the doctor suspect pregnancy. She swore up and down it was impossible as she was a virgin. Doc insisted she pee on the magic stick anyway. It came up positive and fairly quickly. She protested so hard they did a full blood test for exact levels. They were 8 times the max normally associated with pregnancy. Imaging found a baseball sized lump on an ovary, They removed it and last time I saw her she was twice that age and doing well.
