I learned a log time ago when i hear the words: "Does someone have a knife?" I follow up with: "what are you cutting?"

If dropped that custom stiletto, I’d rather it stick in my foot than hit the ground.

Answer: any of your knives when the mechanically declined coworker is eyeing a slotted fastener...

The number 1 knife you never let any one use? A super expensive Japanese Gyoto knife with super hard steel at the cutting edge! My sister found my ultra expensive Nakagawa Gyoto hidden in my cabinet in its Saya while over for Thanksgiving and decided to try to hack at bone with it, which chipped it to death. Litteraly a 1500 dollar work of art.

That’s why I always carry two knives with one being a beater

The biggest thing about expensive knives is that most people simply don't have any conception of HOW expensive (and in some cases irreplaceable) they can be.

I just don't hand my knives off to anyone. Learned that lesson the hard way.

is your background a 2010 f150 seat?

For the frame lock, it’s probably because people assume that it would be a bad idea to stick your finger in where the blade would go

I once owned a kris-bladed balisong. Both sides of that curvy beauty were scalpel sharp, not a knick anywhere. Mainly because it terrified me, and I would only ever flip it gently, slowly, and with utmost care. A friend saw it on my desk, and assumed he would prove how great he was at stunting with a butterfly knife. He immediately took it by the "safe" handle, flipped it around his finger, and ringed himself to the bone in one smooth motion, a spectacular spurt of the red stuff, and dropped that knife and gave it it's first chip on its blade. I rushed him to the hospital, and he had stitches as an index finger ring for the next two weeks.

I don’t hand anyone any of my knives anymore. Everyone thinks they need to rate the sharpness of the blade as if that’s anything other than a judgement of how recently I sharpened it. The reason it bothers me is because everyone has it in their head that the way to test this is by shaving their arm or fingernail. Like bro, I cut apples and stuff with that. I don’t want your arm hair or fingernail shavings in my knife. Especially if the only thing I’m getting out of it is you saying “man, you need to sharpen this” after. Gross

If it ain’t a kitchen knife, I ain’t handing it to a non-knife person unless its name begins with Mora, Opinel or Victorinox.

My first experience with this was luckily a 30 dollar hardware store special. Handed it to a friend at work who immediately threw it at the cork board behind him...

A lot of these issues—switchblades, gravity knives, etc.—are unfamiliar because stupid laws banning them have made them artificially uncommon.

I’ve noticed a lot of older people (mostly silent generation and boomer types) have trouble figuring out modern folding knives. You won’t believe the number of times I’ve purchased spring assist knives at an antique mall and when I have the old lady running the shop take it up for me to check out, she’ll pull the knife open with both hands to see the price sticker on the blade, even though she doesn’t have to do that and you flip it open one-handed with the flipper. These people are used to old school slip joints and lock backs that you open with both hands. Even some people in these generations have trouble figuring out liner locks if you can believe that.

I once had a customer at my sales job ask to see my microtech hera, I handed it to him and he almost cut his thumb on it testing the blade and then said "i can make this sharper for you" and took it to a belt grinder without even asking. Dulled the shit out of the M390 steel but thought he did a great job because he used to be a "knife maker". Last time I let anyone besides friends see my knives.

If you are afraid of the Reate Exo-K, it will sense it and attack you. You need to dominate.

For the first time in 10 years, I reunited with my son. After a little chat about our hobbies. I handed him my serrated Microtech Glycon. His eyes lit up, instant ice breaker. His my kind of guy❤

When I was a student, I decided to get a proper chef's knife - nothing fancy or expensive, just a decent knife that chops food better than the cheap serrated ones I was used to at home. After a couple of months ALL FOUR of my housemates ended up cutting themselves with it, either when using it or when one of them had left it in the sink with the dirty plates and someone had reached in without looking. No serious cuts thankfully.

In the end I just kept it in my room.
