The books go into a lot more detail on several things, one of which was the scene when Peta throws the bread to Katniss. He purposely burnt the bread knowing his mom would beat him and make him feed it to the pigs, but he used it as an excuse to sneak some to Katniss. That bread saved Katniss and her family. Her father had recently died and she was struggling to feed her family. The bread fed them for a couple days and with those days she was able to remember her father's teachings about plants and hunting in the woods (she had been too scared to go into the woods without her father). From that hope the bread gave her, she was able to find a way to provide for her family. Peta quite literally saved her that day.

You’re the perfect reactor to watch this saga, tbh. I always trust that you’ll get almost every single details in the story, even the littlest ones. I know we’re still in the first movie/book but i’m already so excited for you to get to Haymitch’s story 🥺🥺

Something I noticed while watching this is just that you are SO media literate and SO good at picking up visual cues and subtext. I've watched a million people react to this movie and you were picking up everything they were putting down in every scene. Honestly kudos to you for being so perceptive and cogent.

You are just the right person to watch The Hunger Games. Your insight, thoughtfulness and compassion is remarkable!

You came around on Haymitch's personality in the end, but there was a reason why he acted that way in the beginning. Every year since his victory he was required to be a mentor to two children he knew would die, horribly, and it broke him to the point he wallowed in alcoholism to get through life. By being distant and unfriendly he could keep the tributes at a distance; so it was self-preservation of his mental state.

9:45 I've seen these movies a hundred times, and for some reason I've never noticed Peeta crying here. Damn that hits hard.

It's interesting that the themes really do apply so much to today's society. The author, Suzanne Collins, said she was flipping through tv channels and went from some stupid reality show (probably Survivor) to real-time scenes of war, and the seed of the series bloomed from there. She's also said her father was in the military, and they used to read books together about various wars and their beginnings through their endings - including the politics behind them and the effect on the people involved.
So glad you're enjoying the performances and the ideology in the movie... it only gets more interesting from here.

I watch tons of reactions to those movies and you're one of the few who also recognize that the careers are also victims of this system. Amazing reaction as always. ❤

You really understood Haymitch. Yes, he chose Katniss over Peeta to mentor and give sponsor gifts because he thought she had a real chance of winning

@terned8893 1 year ago

Probably the most empathetic and observant reactor. I truly admire you and you're a joy to watch.

All my years of watching this film, I never noticed Peeta crying in the carriage on the way to the train. Wow

3:44 "she looks like she steps down from the met gala"
I think she got the point of the francise right away.

18:15 he IS getting serious about helping them. He refused a refill on his alcohol. 😭

Harry Potter started the 21st century trend of creating film franchises out of young adult fiction novels, but it's this movie that shifted that trend from fantasy to sci-fi.

You going back to re-read because you needed to lock in harder is exactly the reason I love this channel ❤️ So deeply invested immediately, you should read the books, you will love how much more little detail & nuance are in the books!

Haymitch tries to not get to close with the tributes because for 23 years he has seen all of them die in there and can probablt recognise pretty fast that there is no way they are make it in there, but with Katniss and Peeta I think he actually saw them having a real chance because of their skills such as Peetas ambition and social competence and Katniss shooting and survivor skills

What you said at 39:15 is the reason why I keep coming back to the hunger games. Even though we may not have a televisioned TV competition of people killing eachother, there are SOOO many parallells to real life. The people in charge are making us eachother's enemies, justifies the violence THEY are using against innocent people and paints every person criticising them as rebels, when they are the real problem. The propaganda in these movies used to be silly to me when I first watched them as a young teen. But now? The parallells to what we see on the news each day are STRONG.

I applaud your media literacy and empathy. So many reactors have trouble following certain aspects of this (or frankly, any) story just by not paying enough attention. Everything is pretty much explained and yet some cannot figure it out. It's sad to see.

The only thing I regret is that they aged up Katniss and Peeta in those flashbacks. I guess they were worried viewers would be confused if they'd stick to the book age (iirc bread situation happened when they were 11?). And judging by how non-existing media literacy is nowadays they were probably right...
