Sixty-five million dollars for one hundred and ninety acres — three hundred and forty-two thousand dollars an acre, fifty-three times what the Texas ranch cost. It is the smallest and most expensive property we have ever walked. And it feels bigger than any of them. The reason is on the other side of the fence line: 317,784 acres of designated Wilderness where no road, no building and no machine can legally exist, permanently. A mile and a half of the Wild and Scenic Gros Ventre River runs through the pastures — the same river that came down the valley in 1927 and took the town of Kelly apart. In this POV tour we walk five log buildings, count the water, tell the story of the largest rockslide in American history, and get to a property tax bill that is not what anyone would guess.

📖 THE STORY
On the morning of 23 June 1925 the north face of Sheep Mountain broke free — roughly 50 million cubic yards of rock, half a mile wide, moving at about fifty miles an hour. It remains the largest rockslide in recorded American history. It landed in the Gros Ventre River and dammed it, forming a natural dam around 225 feet high and creating Lower Slide Lake. Engineers and geologists examined it and declared it safe. The people of Kelly slept in tents on high ground for months anyway, then eventually moved back into their houses. On 18 May 1927 the dam partially failed. The forest supervisor saw farm equipment coming downriver, drove up the valley, met a wall of water and turned back to reach a telephone. By 11:30 that morning the town of Kelly was gone — around 75 buildings destroyed, six people killed, roughly 40 families left with nothing. Only the school, the church and the parsonage were left standing. The scar on Sheep Mountain is still visible from the valley floor.
