Beyond the West Lake and the poetic landscapes of Jiangnan, Hangzhou holds a far more authentic and down-to-earth world—the local wet markets and breakfast stalls!
This time, I traveled to Hangzhou and explored the Damalong Morning Market and Fengqi Road Market back-to-back. Let's see what Hangzhou locals buy and eat every day, and find out which of these two vibrant markets is more worth visiting!
First stop: Damalong Morning Market, starting with a classic Hangzhou breakfast:
🥣 Savory Soy Milk + Youtiao (fried dough sticks)
🥟 Pan-fried dumplings and baozi from a cast-iron skillet
🐟 Freshly fried crispy Hangzhou Su Yu (crispy fish)
🥯 Congbao Hui (scallion crispy rolls)
🥚 Handmade egg dumplings
🥞 Qiandao Lake Diyan pancakes
🍚 Traditional Hangzhou pickles
🍖 Braised pork intestines and marinated ribs
🍘 Youdun'er (crispy radish patties)
🥟 Freshly wrapped wontons
🌱 Fermented amaranth stalks and traditional soy sauce
🪷 Fresh summer lotus flowers and seed pods
🍓 Seasonal fresh bayberries (Yangmei)
Next, I headed to Fengqi Road Market, which surprised me even more—there is actually a Michelin-recommended restaurant hidden right inside the market!
Wang's Shaobing has long lines forming early in the morning. They prepare pan-fried dumplings, Youtiao, shaobing flatbreads, sticky rice, and Hangzhou Xiaolongbao fresh on the spot.
Taking a bite of a golden, crispy dumpling accompanied by a bowl of savory soy milk with Youtiao... this is the true morning comfort food of Hangzhou locals.
Besides breakfast, Fengqi Road Market also features crispy fish, marinated duck, roast chicken, various fried snacks, zongzi, pork knuckles, cured meats, as well as a wide array of live seafood and freshwater catches like eels, crayfish, river prawns, frogs, and sea bass.
This time, we are skipping the tourist spots and diving straight into the everyday lives of Hangzhou locals.
If you love Chinese wet markets, food exploration, local breakfasts, and authentic street life, you definitely don't want to miss this episode!
