Director: Frank Tuttle
Writer: S.S. Van Dine (novel by)
Uncover a cornerstone of early crime cinema with this classic Paramount Pictures mystery, directed by Frank Tuttle and starring the iconic William Powell as the suave amateur sleuth Philo Vance. Based on the bestselling novel by S. S. Van Dine, this gripping pre-Code whodunit brings one of literature’s most popular detectives to the screen in a stylish tale of wealth, secrets, and murder in the shadow of the 1929 stock market crash.

This film marks Powell’s third outing as the refined and intellectual Philo Vance, following The Canary Murder Case and The Greene Murder Case, and preceding his final appearance in the role in The Kennel Murder Case (1933). Powell’s performance further solidified the gentleman-detective persona that would later define his screen legacy.

The strong supporting cast includes William “Stage” Boyd, Eugene Pallette, Paul Lukas, and Natalie Moorhead, contributing to the film’s layered mystery and polished atmosphere. Produced by Paramount Pictures, the film stands as a key entry in the successful series of Philo Vance adaptations that dominated early sound-era detective cinema. With its methodical investigation, urbane dialogue, and art deco sensibility, this production reflects Hollywood’s fascination with cerebral crime-solving during the transition to talkies.

William powell is Philo Vance. I cannot read the stories without hearing his voice in my head.
I really wish they would completly restore these films.

My father in law was a marine going to the pacific theater in the Second World War they were stationed in Los Angeles before shipping out the Hollywood stars opened their doors to service men as a way of saying goodbye and thank you
He and about 20 other marines were driven into Beverly Hills or Bel Air and when they arrived William Powell was there to greet them he and his wife personally served them and chatted with them like they were family
He never forgot that and was always so praise worthy of Mr William Powell

I never tire of watching these great old movies. Being an insomniac, there a huge plus. Last, with all the films produced now, one would think they’d make 1to2 a year of quality, but unfortunately, that’s laughable.
Blessings All 🙏🇺🇸✝️

Say, this is quite the channel you've got going here. I subscribed a while back, but am just now getting around to checking it out. I blew through 5 pre-code movies in one day and night. I love pre-code Hollywood and am so glad to see someone else with the same fascination. The quality is very good, considering how old they are. I'll be checking more of them out. Many thanks to you and whoever else helps you work on cleaning these up. Cheers from Springfield, Massachusetts! 🍺

Can watch William Powell always; original intelligent gentleman; wish Natalie Moorehead did more movies; best film copy of this movie; almost seems more of a play on stage.

My favorite William powell obviously don't remember him as a movie actor. But love him in these old detective movies. I think it's his voice and the way he speaks.
