Before video games, smartphones, and the internet, there was nothing quite like opening up a brand-new model kit.
For millions of boys in the 1960s, model kits meant hours spent building cars, planes, monsters, rockets, and machines that seemed almost too cool to be real. Some were found under the Christmas tree, others were proudly displayed on bedroom shelves — and a few were the kits every kid desperately wanted but never managed to get.
In this video, we're taking a nostalgic look back at *10 model kits that captured the imagination of boys in the 1960s* — including some of the most memorable and sought-after kits of the era.
How many of these do you remember? And which model kit did *you* always dream of owning?

I can't recall how I found out about it but I was transfixed by the aircraft and eventually...as in this year when I've turned 70...I bought a re-released version of the Lindberg Pogo and it is waiting patiently on a shelf for when I get the time to build it, nowadays I have a much more informed access to information about such things and looking at the detail of the kit it's pretty basic but I don't care because I still have the feelings of excitement when I look at the box. Definitely worth the 60 year wait.
We built all of our kits with liquid glue only.
Today, the Seaview kit (actually from the 1961 movie) is still in production, and has been joined by a companion kit of the TV version with 4 nose windows and 20 missile tubes, both kits in 1/400 scale and about 30-35cm long, and a huge 1/144 scale kit of the TV version complete with Flying Sub that's just shy of a full meter in length. (The "real thing" would have been 140 meters or about 460 feet long, midway in size between the U.S. Navy's real Lafayette class SSBNs with 16 missile tubes and the later Ohio-class "boomers" with 24 tubes.)
As unhappy as the Navy was with Renwal and Revell over their Polaris submarine kits, the Seaview model series almost made Adm. Rickover call for Irwin Allen & Co.'s heads on platters. The depiction of the fail-safe procedures for missile launch shown in the TV show was just a little too close to the actual setup for his peace of mind.
with original Box Art by Ray Gaedke. It cost $.49, ($29.69 in 2026), much or than my dad would pay for a model kit and more than I could save up. I never got it.
Between the ages of 7 and 13 years old. You can buy a model kit for UNDER
$6. And with my allowance of $10 a week I could buy a model kit and still have $4 left over to buy glue and paint !!! What ever people....
