At the end of the 15th century, the Moscow Principality did not at all resemble the huge state that we see on the world map today. It was only one of several large centers that emerged on the lands of the former Rus'. Independent principalities and republics existed nearby with their own rulers, laws, and political traditions. But within a few centuries, almost all of them would disappear from the political map, and their lands would fall under the rule of Moscow. This large-scale conquest of foreign lands was initiated by Ivan III. During his reign, Moscow increasingly actively conquered its neighbors, annexed their territories, and transformed once independent lands into parts of a single state. His successors continued this course, and war, coercion, deportations, and brutal repression became constant tools of Moscow's expansion. Muscovites pushed eastward all the way to the Pacific Ocean, enslaving hundreds of diverse peoples. Along the way, dozens of peoples were conquered, taxed, and forced to live by the rules of the new state. Thus, by the beginning of the 18th century, Muscovy had become the largest empire in the world. But how did it achieve such a triumphant result for itself? Today we will talk about how the huge Russian Empire grew from one small Moscow principality. Why did independent states one after another lose the fight against Moscow? And by what methods did the tsarist government consolidate its rule over the conquered lands?
