Who are the Kuban Cossacks – Russians or Ukrainians? Or perhaps Caucasians, Tatars, or descendants of the Brodniki, as is often said about the Cossacks? Whose Kuban is it – Russian or Ukrainian? In this video, I, Pavel Reutov, PhD in history, will discuss the history of Kuban from the 18th to the 20th centuries, the formation of the Kuban Cossacks and their origins, the interactions between the Little Russian and Great Russian populations of the region, the Kuban dialect – balachka – and what language it is a dialect of. How was Ukrainization carried out in the region, and is it true that the Ukrainian population was forcibly Russified? What happened in Kuban during the Civil War, collectivization, dispossession, and the famine of 1932-1933?
