I was with Secretariat at 6 AM the morning after the Belmont , photographing him for a magazine . I thought we would do a portrait with Ron Turcotte , but after meeting with his trainer they had me go out to the track and shoot him blazing around the track . You could feel the ground shake as he was passing me. It was a thrill and then I took shots of him being washed and toweled off. He was a very friendly and magnificent horse, and I was privileged to be there.
I was 10 years old and horse crazy in 1973, when Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes. My beloved grandfather and I both cried when he won the Triple Crown, and he said we'll never see another horse in our lifetime that surpasses Secretariat, and he was right. Thank you for the beautiful memory of the greatest racehorse ever. Hail Big Red!
What made the Belmont victory even more special for Secretariat was the weather. It was extremely hot and humid that day, which is why many thought Secretariat would collapse during the race due to his pace. But his huge heart enabled him to process oxygen at a greater rate than other horses.
Whoever called the 73 Derby a weak field?? Multiple G1 winners (Angle Light , Out Native, My Gallant) the mighty Forego, Shecky Greene , who set the fast pace, was the best sprinter in the country in 73 with the eclipse award to prove it, and the Exacta are the two fastest times in the history of the race.
Secretariat and Sham were distantly related through their bloodlines, specifically sharing a common grandsire, Princequillo. While they were not direct siblings both carried the blood of this prominent stamina producing stallion in their pedigrees. Secretariat, heart was estimated to be 22lbs, and Sham's, heart was weighed at 18lbs.
And he STILL holds all 3 of those races records over 50 years later. Words like Monumental, Spectacular, Amazing..still does not do his achievement justice.
Secretariat's grandsire on his dam's side was Princequillo. He was Irish bred and known for his extreme endurance in long races but not for extreme speed (random fact, Princequillo was also the great, great grandsire of Zenyatta). On the other hand, Bold Ruler, Secretariat's sire had the speed but not the extreme endurance. The odds of getting the best traits from both sides has got to have been an astronomical improbability. I was a young adult in 1973, and the sheer awe surrounding Secretariat and his races at the time was almost magical.
