In 1990, 78% of Germans felt free to speak their mind. By 2023, only 40% did. What's wrong with Germany? I'm German, and I think the answer is neither the AfD nor Antifa.
In this video essay I look at the Brandmauer (firewall) around the AfD after it won 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt, the Verfassungsschutz and its former chief's remark about the AfD's poll numbers, political violence from the left (the Budapest hammer attacks) and from the right (the murder of Walter Lübcke), Germany's tax and welfare burden, migration and the official crime statistics broken down by nationality, antisemitism, free speech in law and in culture, and what Immanuel Kant wrote about all of this in 1784.
