Persecution of Government Critics – How Free Is Our Democracy Still?

Packed rows, clear words, and one central message: Freedom of expression is the foundation of every true democracy – and this very foundation is increasingly under pressure. At a lecture event organized by the Working Group on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid, we addressed a highly topical issue: the persecution of government critics – not only worldwide, but also in Germany and the EU. The focus was on the case of Swiss security expert Jacques Baud, who was sanctioned by the EU – without a court ruling, without due process, and with massive personal consequences. As the keynote speaker, the former president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Dr. Hans-Georg Maaßen, analyzed the legal and democratic dimensions of this sanctions system. For us in the AfD parliamentary group, one thing is clear:
