I quit black-eyed peas for moi moi and akara… and honestly, I’m not going back.
In this video, I used red lentils as a substitute for beans, and the results completely surprised me. This lentil moi moi came out soft, rich, and naturally vibrant, and I didn’t even use palm oil, yet it still had that same beautiful color.

If you live abroad or struggle to find good beans, this is a game-changer. This method works perfectly for both akara (bean fritters) and moi moi (steamed pudding). This is one of the best African food substitutes abroad you need to try!
Let me know in the comments, are you quitting black-eyed peas after this?

I have being using Red lentils for Akara and moimoi for a very long time:since 2020 and it amazing. Sometimes l do half red lentils and half Oloyi beans and it still works.
I also use the yellow lentils for yam porridge. Fyl do not use the yellow lentil for moimoi or Akara because it won’t work because it doesn’t form together.
Thanks Claude!

I made akara with lentils today and it was good. Today is my first time of eating a lentil dish too. Thanks for always making things easier.

* Honey you are the BE$ST at what you do right now. NOBODY else does it like you so just hang on and keep going - don't PUSH to brand big too soon - AND just ignore any jealous haters - ok - because they are trying to trigger you and show that you are not as good as you seem. NOT TRUE - you ARE! Listen always always always be nice - no matter what kind of day you had - no matter what someone may write about you. Always always always stay nice. You are at the top of your game and only going higher!!!!!!!!!

No matter how many ingredients you add, lentils just can’t replicate the taste of real beans when making moi moi or akara. Black-eyed beans bought here are still the best option — they truly make all the difference. It might just be my taste buds, but after trying moi moi with lentils, I wasn’t a fan, and my family felt the same way. That was the end of our lentil experiment.

Well-done my sister. I am a Cameroonian watching from France. I am definitely going to try out this red lentils. So far i have contented myself with the green lentils as a side dish. Thank you for your video. I will get back to you when I must have carried out your recipe.
