LYRICS

I saw them carry blankets
Through the hospital at dawn
Footsteps in the hallway
Crying when they'd gone

And somewhere in the silence
The old men bow their heads
As if suffering itself
Was proof their god cares

They love the sound of mourning
Love the collapse of trust
Love the girl who learns quickly
To divide herself from touch

Love the trembling hand at supper
Love the lowered eyes in prayer
Love the body taught to vanish
While they stand above it
with ravenous hunger

But something survived them
Something always does

Godslayer
Spit in the mouth of heaven
Godslayer
Drag the saints through the mud

Godslayer
Let everyone hear it
The world outgrew
Your oppressive rules

You can hear it in the city
In the daughters they can't reach
In the lovers still undressing
Without shame beneath the sheets

In every buried question
In every outlawed kiss
In every mother staring
At a garden that still exists

If misery is sacred
Then nothing should survive
Yet every year the roses
Return against the ice

Godslayer
Tear the veil
Godslayer
Leave the altar to burn

Godslayer
No angels left above us
Only the living
And everything they learned

Let the old world choke on incense
Let the cathedral bells go still
We were never asking permission
Only waiting
To stop being afraid.

Godslayer!
