Hans Niemann is an American chess grandmaster who in September of 2022, lit the chess world on fire by defeating grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, arguably the greatest chess player of all-time. His victory sparked the biggest scandal in chess history and sent the chess world down a rabbit hole they will never forget.

I think the one thing that's unambiguously clear about this situation is that for some reason top level chess seems rife with deeply immature and antisocial personalities who weren't equipped to handle a nuanced situation like this with grace

The only thing I've learnt from this is that 90% of chess high rank players may be good at chess but are not emotionally stable and cannot handle things as simple as cheating allegations.

The fact i find that most explain's Magnus' behaviour is that it came months after he had changed his goal from defending his World Championship, to concentrating on becoming the first ever player to reach a 2900 ELO rating. Losing to such a low rated player, and the loss of a massive amount of ELO rating it caused, immediately ruined his goal. So i can only imagine how he must have felt that day.

If Hans didn’t cheat, then Magus basically slandered him. Magnus didn’t say anything, but he knows exactly what was going to happen when he refused to clarify.

the centipawn loss thing is so funny because it's basically the opposite of the "100% accuracy" argument. If hans plays with 100% accuracy he's cheating because no one can play with 100% accuracy, if hans has a high avg centipawn loss (ergo plays inaccurate moves) he must be cheating because he's not good at chess

The explanation of Hans' rapid rise as a result of playing more often and overshooting his ELO during Covid is an excellent point, and one that I haven't heard anywhere else and wouldn't have occurred to me. I watched the whole scandal unfold in real time, and it was kind of hilarious to me how unreasonable the entire chess community was. It all fell into very basic sports narratives of the golden boy and the bad boy. Just another moment when you realize that very smart, talented, and even reasonable people can fail to think critically, under the spell of their own biases.
