The Rockpile: 126 Marines Killed to Take the Mountain | Vietnam Documentary

There was no strategic value in holding The Rockpile that justified what it cost. A jagged, near-vertical limestone outcrop rising from the jungle floor of Quảng Trị Province, it was too small to base troops on, too exposed to supply, and too close to the DMZ to ever be truly safe. The Marines held it anyway — because from its summit, you could see everything.
For years, small teams of Marines were inserted by helicopter onto a peak barely wide enough to stand on, tasked with calling in fire on North Vietnamese movement below. Meanwhile, in the valleys surrounding it, some of the bloodiest fighting of the entire war was playing out — at Mutter's Ridge, at Cam Lo, along the Razorback. The Rockpile sat at the center of it all, a symbol of the grinding, attritional war that Washington refused to call unwinnable.
One hundred and twenty-six Marines died in the battles that swirled around it. Thousands more were wounded. And when America finally withdrew, the NVA took it in an afternoon.
This is the story of The Rockpile — what it cost to hold, what it was worth, and what it says about a war fought over ground that was never really the point.
