my dad taught me at a young age that there's a distinction between hunting and killing. Greatful for that lesson .

Ron had me at the Bluejay. Knowing animals, your surroundings, how nature works within itself that we are visiting, is absolute key to be an outdoorsman.

I was on the long range band wagon for a little while. Then I talked to a former Marine Sniper and spent some time shooting with him. He told me to practice at long range but when hunting get closer and 400 yards is long enough anytime. After seeing everything that can go wrong at 600-1000 yards I understood what he was saying a deer just taking 1/4 of a step can change a good hit into a gut shot and painful death for deer. He said go to range and ring steel out as far as you want to to feel macho and like a sniper. When you go hunting be respectful to the animal and make sure you can make the shot on a bad day or don’t pull the trigger. But I believe we need to except other views and stay together as hunters. Enough people trying to shut us down as it is .

No grand dad or dad doing any hunting, my slightly younger brother got me interested in hunting but at 71 last year on my first hunt for blacktail (unsuccessful) i don’t have much time left to experience being a hunter.
That said, i agree with Spooner about learning to be a hunter even if means never to bring meat home. It has to be done right or just make it an experience.

This was a great and thought provoking conversation.  I appreciated Ron’s point that we are natural predators and part of nature.  The way certain people act like we are interfering with nature by being hunters and managing the wildlife (predators and prey alike) drives me crazy.  We are not aliens or foreign to nature.  We are part of it just like the wild creatures.  Good video!

I am 68 now and grew up in the hills of Kentucky and was taught to hunt by my grandmother and she would ration my ammo, if I missed a shot it meant I had to do some heavy-duty work before I got another round but if I was successful then she would gladly give me my next round without any work involved. It taught me to be very picky when pulling the trigger.

The conversation about being “dirty” and people being so far removed from their food that they’re skirmish absolutely deserves a deeper dive. I have cattle and my wife’s sisters kids visited for the first time,  16 & 14, their dad never got them outside and they’re scared of grass that’s over 3” tall. Considering how feral I grew up, this was such an eye opening thing for me to see that they just live in this sterile world and how just the smallest things triggered fear in them. It’s really a sad state of affairs and we need to figure out how to change it somehow,

Joseph, I must say, you’re the most candid and straightforward no nonsense person I’ve listened to. Your ability to articulate English words and expressions has helped me really expand my vocabulary for a dumb farm kid from Utah. Hands down my favorite podcast/YouTube channel. I listened to a lot of these when I find myself working alone. This was one of my favorites!

Love my ruger no 1. Also have a few rolling blocks and there's something that feels so pure about having a single shot.  Feels like you're connecting with ancestors who might have used muskets.

Bow hunting forced me to be a better hunter! 👍😊👍 and I kept rifle hunting!  A lot of the time I was bow hunting I was the only person in the woods! On our property! So I learned a lot about how the weather affected deer movement! I hunted in South Miss on some beautiful Oak timber! White Oak, red oak water oak cow oak it was a paradise to hunt! Especially bow hunting! Made gun hunting easier. I have slipped up to 5 yards from a deer! The deer didn’t know I was there till he heard me draw my bow. 😅

My dad taught me to stalk the woods and still hunt fields. In Eastern Canada the 303 British and 30-30 covered all the bases growing up for medium sized game like deer.

Makes me smile any time I see a/the Browning 6.8 Western or mention of this Dark Horse cartridge.

Still hoping to see a video on “The Best Cartridges and Bullets for Mule Deer” in the near future.

In fact, I think it would make a great series.

“Best cartridges (and projectiles) for Pronghorn, Coues, Bighorn, Mountain Goat, Bison, etc.” These videos would make great additions to the existing episodes on the best cartridges for Elk, Deer, Cape Buffalo so on and so forth.
