I secretly learned to speak North Korean dialect from an actual North Korean defector and then I went to real North Korean restaurants to try ordering in North Korean and things got a little out of hand.

My first stop was Seoul, South Korea, at a restaurant run by North Korean defectors. My next stop was Beijing, China, where I ordered at an actual DPRK government-run restaurant staffed by North Koreans still “in the system.”

You made that man so happy talking about his language and culture. He will never have an experience like that again. An american in South Korea connecting with him on his terms.

When he called you a spy, he was only half joking. Some defectors from North Korea will always keep looking over their shoulders with a little paranoia, regardless of how long ago they defected. Depending on who they were in NK, they may be still being pursued. They stay wary.

I always thought Xiaomanyc was a genius, and surely he's smart but you can see how much he's putting himself under stress to learn the languages. This video alone, he's force learning by putting himself into uncomfortable positions which is really admirable

That dude was so incredibly nice. You can tell he had a tough time in North Korea and really is incredibly kind because of that. So when he encountered a foreigner speaking his language and took interest, he immediately helped him out. What a guy!
