A spill plane is a worthless plane. it is used to male spills. These are wood curls with a specific shape. used for lighting candles and other things before matches. here is a video showing one being restored and talking about how they were used. this is the second time I have tried to make this Spill plane kit from Red Rose Productions. if you want to see the video where I failed you can do that here How not to Make a Spill Plane Want to remind yourself of the Woodwright's shop and traditional Woodworking?

A spill lends elegance to lighting a fire, grill, lantern etc... that today’s butane ignition devices do efficiently but inelegantly. I make spills from shavings off from my skew rebate plane. Thanks for the nudge to make a purpose built spill plane.

I love your coating technique. 👌

If I didn't already know, I'd be scratching my noggin wondering what this tool is for.

For some reason I kept thinking about Mickey Spillane.

You would probably enjoy owning a set of left handed drill bits for the hand drill.

I bought a book on building planes and it told the story of the spill plane. It came from the time when only rich people could afford matches. The design of the spill will allow it to burn without going out but burn slowly. You can shake it out and reuse it.
The thing that amazes me is that someone came up with this design. I try to be a good student at OU (Observation University) and think about the things led up to making the spill plane. Looking at what angle to bed the plane iron and the scew angle to get the end result. I have such total respect for those who have gone before to get us where we are today. This is a note those oldsters with whiskers. Please share your past with worthy ones of the new generation or all that knowledge will go to the grave never to be seen again.

Always a pleasure to watch a true craftsman at work. You make a considerably involved task look effortless and relaxing. I like the “911 what’s your emergency” bit... makes you remember “you could shoot an eye out”.

I LOVE that wee plane. Not sure that I'd make one, but you never know.

Very nice. Always thought about making some of my own tools. Nice to see the process from beginning to end.

Now you need to make a left handed version to spiral the other way.

I do like these videos - one little thing - since you're not talking in these, maybe a little preview of WHAT your end product will be would help a LOT in knowing what part /aspect you're working on at any one time. I found myself trying to figure what you were cutting or why you were drilling there or ... Just a preview of the finished product might have avoided the confusion. I KNOW you have another channel explaining it etc. but THIS is the kind of video I prefer. You do great on both formats.

As much as I like your videos and have learned lots from you I would like to sugges you using the BLUF system. BLUF means "Bottom Line Up Front" and is used in writing informative articles where the point or argument of the article is stated in the first paragraph, then supported, then the poibt or argument again at the end. So for you video you would show the finished iten, then the detail and work how you made it, the another of the finished item.
