You make me want to become a blackpowder revolver enthusiast...because every video you upload, i learn something new from somebody that figured it out himself..and not read about herer and there or hearsay stuff. The real expirience self made is the one that counts the most, and thats what makes this channel real real good. Facts not rumors. Tests and good or bad results, what works what not. This is how Channels should be.
I have a pair of 1860's and a pair of Walkers and shoot gunfighter style in Cowboy action in Australia, and I've done this mod to these guns and even lightened the hammers on the 1860's. I haven't had cap jams in these guns since I did the mod. I mainly use the walkers now and no cap jams ever. I've done the mod on many other shooters cap and ball revolvers, and have had nothing but good reports from everyone. It makes shooting Gunfighter style hassle free.! Doc Holliday in Australia
Thanks for the video! I got into cap and ball revolvers in the mid 1970s and I don’t remember having trouble with cap jams. Yes I have trouble with them now in the newer guns. My second generation colt navy still runs well. Something has changed over the years.
You gentlemen have taken the modern C&B revolver from a historical oddity to a practical and reliable firearm you would stake your life on, if need be. I bought a Ruger Old Army because it was the only thing I could consistently get to run. Not any more!
I do not know for sure, but I have read many times that the percussion caps were made from thinner foil in the nineteenth century, allowing them to blow apart easier. I'm not sure that would actually help though. Thinking back the relatively few cap jams I have had were from the cap blowing back under the hammer and working their way down into the mechanism.
Did NOT Suck! My 1860 cap jamming problem was solved by switching to the fully fluted cylinder and ditching the calvary. My 1861 doesn't have a jamming issue (like you said not all will). Most of my 1851's don't have issues. My 1862 pocket police is the biggest POS Uberti makes. I did make a cap post for it out of a penny and some JB Weld. I had some bolt issues (the bolt wasn't sliding off the hammer cam in half cock and binding the action, just like your 1861). I took a bit off the bolt leg on the right side, and that fixed the issue. I think the cap post is a brilliant idea for modern C&B pistols with cap jamming issues. Great video as always. God Bless
That cap rake is bitch'n as you both always say. That is a really cool idea. On a side note. I am almost done working on a treadmill ball mill. But, I did something different than what I have been seeing other people do or put together. I used almost everything that was on it. Nothing bought. I then put it on legs using the control and handle support. As the back legs and the leftover pieces of frame for the front legs. Even used the handles for carrying handles. To move it around. Which wasn't all that hard or take long. Though I did mig weld almost all of it. I will still have to drill new holes for the wires and the variable speed tension cable. To be able to reassemble and reuse the control cover. Then clearance details for the main cover over the motor and moving parts. A pic would be an easier visiual description. The small amount of time and creativity. That came about from watching you explore and experiment here. Ended up creating an interesting project for me. Which has been so far satisfying to build.
Your channel has been entertaining, surprising at times, fun and educational Thank you for that.
I had fun doing this project. Still have a little finish work and painting. For rust protection. I surprised myself. With how much I could do. With just what was on and inside the machine and what hardware and tools I already had at home. 😊.
Jake, I'm not bragging but just passing on information. For many years I competed in the SASS Frontiersman category with 1860 armies. Pretty much retired now but back in the day I had many state championships and in 2004 won the Winter Range national championship Frontiersman with these 1860s. I used a similar mod that we called cap guards. This type mod is definitely the answer. Most matches I had no misses which means no cap problems. In the SASS rules it is referred to as the Manhattan Conversion. I have a pair of SS second gen Colts with nearly the identical mod in your video and even though I haven't used them in any matches they have been flawless every time i've shot them. Definitely the thing and I have lightened main springs.
