This is a good process, did exactly this to similar rusted metal and lasted well. Just as you said, follow with 80 on a DA, then thorough wax n grease remover, and epoxy primer, any filler on top of that. Will be perfect for 50+ years.

Thanks for the tips.  Now here's one for you:  Wrap a paper towel around your light to reduce the glare when videoing a shiny surface.  It makes the light less harsh and spreads it out more making it easier to see detail like scratches or remaining rust.

crazy tp use a angle grinder w/o a guard.  Knee pads will save you in your old age. that wheel works good!

had same issue with my 98 1500 sanded then used white vinegar soaked on rags overnight then primed waiting couple months to make sure it doesnt come back vinegar worked great so far

You seem like a cool person to smoke a bowl with and just work on cars all day

I found that nylon wire brush on the grinder works really well to clean rust.

Great video Mike!

Heck yeah!  Back on the elco! My co-worker and I have really enjoyed your videos on this car. Keep up the good work 👏
Ps. Let's get a sneak peek of that beautiful chevelle under the cover 🤞

I use scotch rite wheels, too. Go to Harbor Freight and by the $139.00 Baxter? tool. 4 inch wide Scot Brite wheel, 40grit. gets the job done.I finish with a white vinegar/water mix( 4 patrs water/ 1 part vinegar)
I soak the area and keep it wet for 29 minutes. You can red scotch bride the surface to get it into the surface. I put a new red scotch rite pad on my DA and hit it twice. Wet microfinish cloth to wipe clean, and  repeat if necessary . The vinegar converts and stops the rust for good. Epoxy over and 2k prime after the epoxy has flashed dry.

I use those disc all the time i buy on amazon much cheaper and seem to last longer than ones from lowes the ones i buy are purple

if you aren't priming this within a couple of hours, Gibbs oil will kepp new rust from forming

Each "different" color stripping wheel is a "different" grit. Most Automotive Repair Shops use PURPLE" which last a pretty long time . Most strip disc that I have seen sold locally to DIYers at Hardware Stores, Walmart, and Harbor Freight were BLACK..

I have heard on other videos not to break the etched surface once you etch it. Maybe sand it with 80 grit first and then etch it.

Glad to see you back on the Elco. I must admit when you mentioned painting it… I thought about those white fenders and decals giving it such a look. Respectfully… would look great finished off in weathered white with that maroon top. I’m sure whatever you decide will look great nonetheless. Great channel… what vehicle is tucked away in the back of your garage under cover?

Maybe I'm overly cautious but I go a little further to neutralize phosphoric acid based rust converters(Ospho/Rust Mort/Klean Strip) after having a few small spots lift on my Nova I painted years ago. Now I add baking soda to the bucket, wipe everything down and follow up with a hose rinse.

Yep....EVERY last little minute DOT of rust, NEEDS ta be removed!.......Again, WHAT kinda genius strips a car and then LEAVES it OUT in the elements FOR ANY LENGTH of TIME, let alone "YEARS".....???...And sorry IF "your friend" DID such or whatever but yeah, STILL....SMH...THX for the video though

I've noticed that some of those discs are mostly filler and leave a plastic mess that is hard to clean off the metal.  Some of the ones I got from Harbor Freight were particularly bad at doing this.  I've also found a "surface conditioning tool" to be great at removing paint and surface rust, but not really great a deep embedded rust.  I let the weight of the tool do the work.

He did all that and isn't dirty bull shit

People think its ok to have rust on ther car thinking its looks cool 😎 n calling it patina 🇺🇲
