Say it like you mean it! 😁  I also am a mid-century modern man (*cough* born in the mid-fifties*cough*cough*), and can relate to your comment that this wasn't even on the radar growing up. There was no roadmap. Thank you for sharing your experiences so that the next generations have that map.

LOL  We say husband, then say partner, then BF (This turns my Husband on, it is weird to me) LOL   But we find ourselves using all of them interchangeably.

Even Aaron Hickland the one-time Editor of OUT Magazine couldn't bring himself to say "husband." (Although he's probably over it by now.) My straight friends use it with nary a blink. That's progress.

I was born in 1960 and relate so much to your journey. I was fortunate enough to have been raised in Atlanta where I could experience support and gay clubs, etc. It was still a scary time because you could still get bashed but you could seek out support…we’ve come a long way and I hope we never get forced back into the closet😊

We're from the same generation as you and have no problem referring to each other as husband in casual conversation. We've been doing so legally for just over 10 years. 🇨🇦 One of our biggest problems was proving we weren't related by blood when we applied for our marriage license. We had hyphenated our surnames three years prior to the legalization of same-sex marriage in Ontario.

Man, he’s taking the words right out of my mouth. Because of the time we were born, the period we grew up, etc., to say the word “husband” is very difficult for me. Sad really, but it is what it is. Everyone reacts differently, sometimes in a hostile way. I’ve experienced both, from very accepting, to disgusted looks and hateful rants on how we’ve destroyed the “institution of marriage.” It’s not easy, I’m always hesitant. Just as an example, I was at a work function recently and I used the word “we.” The automatic reply is, “So, where’s your wife at the moment?” Having to explain yourself is very uncomfortable, but I do.

It's great hearing other mature gay men talk about the things that have come along with marriage equality.  Especially the little things, like learning to say husband; and, bigger things too!

I personnaly love Partner in Crime, in English. But I often insist on Husband when dealing with colleagues. And I go on saying "We do not live in Sin"...

Back in the day we called our husbands “lovers”.  “This is my lover so and so” or “oh, they’re lovers”.

yeah, for years i said "companion" and then we got married 5 years ago, and initially saying "husband" was odd to me, now it's matter of fact. and no one blinks an eye at the term. people used to say, "your friend." oh yeah, he's my friend and a lot more!

My partner and I after getting married chose to you use the word spouse, it works better for us. When we say spouse to anyone they understand we're married.

I dunno...i don't like saying 'husband', not because of historical shame or internal homophobia or that I don't think we deserve to be accorded the same rights/terminology as straights, but husband and wife sounds so heterosexist and implications of dominance or 'head of household'...even ownership.  Too role-based.  i still prefer 'partner' because thats what we are...equal to each other equal in responsibilities and benefits and each one half of the whole.  But I do place my hand with my wedding ring very prominently whenever we're in a place that it matters, so there's no mistake.  But if you wanna call each other husbands, cool for you
