Arina was widowed early. She works as a station attendant and is raising five-year-old Sonya alone. After her father's death, she sold his tire shop and parking lot and deposited eleven million rubles into an account: it's money for her daughter's education. Soon, Vadim, an auto electrician from the garage cooperative, shows up. He's a jack-of-all-trades and immediately captivates Sonya, playing a song about a steam locomotive in her car. Even Arina's mother, Valentina, is smitten and teaches her son-in-law how to make the late Pyotr Gordeevich's signature cranberry juice.

At the wedding, Valentina, who worked as a sign language interpreter for twenty years, lip-reads Vadim's strange conversation with his cousin Stella. But that evening, she turns it all into a joke. Then Arina starts falling asleep, loses her job, and the doctor diagnoses her with a medical condition. All the money disappears from her account.

This is a story about a mother's instinct, about a child's truth that adults didn't want to hear, and about how a loved one turns out to be completely different from what they seemed. Listen on the "Like Yesterday" channel. Subscribe to stay up to date with new stories.
