With Quini, Ferrero, Mesa, Abelardo, Luis Enrique, and an unforgettable generation, Sporting competed for the league title and reached two consecutive Copa del Rey finals.
The Asturian team also became a regular in European competition, with five appearances in the UEFA Cup.
For years, El Molinón was one of the toughest stadiums in Spanish football, and Sporting was a frequent opponent among the top teams.

Haber vencido en El Molinón a Torino, Milan y Partizán y haberse enfrentado a otros grandes rivales como PSV, Estrella Roja, Colonia o Steaua de Bucarest no estaba al alcance de cualquiera.
Tampoco lo estaba tener en tu equipo al Pichichi o al Zamora de la competición, como lo fueron Quini y Ablanedo repetidas veces.
La ristra de internacionales aportados en aquellos años, como Quini, Churruca, Maceda, Joaquín, Mesa, Eloy, Ablanedo, Manjarin, Luis Enrique, Abelardo o Juanele dice mucho de lo bien que se trabajaba en el club.
Como dices, el fútbol ha cambiado y en Gijón para mal. La conversión en S.A.D. fue el fin de aquel brillante Sporting.

Un dato que dice mucho del poderío de aquel Sporting se dio a la temporada siguiente, la 79-80, donde el Sporting arrancó la liga ganando los 7 primeros partidos de liga, pleno absoluto, 7 partidos y 7 victorias, líder en solitario. Aquella temporada, sin embargo , fue la Real Sociedad la que estuvo 32 partidos invicta cayendo en la antepenúltima jornada en el Sánchez-Pizjuan y ganando finalmente el Real Madrid la liga.
Un saludo desde Valencia … de alguien que descubrió el fútbol de niño siendo el Sporting uno de los grandes del fútbol español.
