An overnight trip to Waihaha Hut in the Pureora Forest Park. I follow the Waihaha Track, which is regularly used by mountain bikes, to get to the Waihaha Hut.

The Waihaha Hut is a typical hunting hut located in a great spot for Red Deer. Join me on my solo overnight wild camp in a back country New Zealand hunter's hut.

Nice spot that is been in there a couple of times. On a really clear day you can also see Mt Taranaki.

The most outstanding and unique feature of Waihaha are the tallest Tanekaha and biggest Toatoa in the country. Not to mention the amazing Totara, matai and Rimu, of course. Waihora Lagoon is a special place . The giant Toatoa trees are in the bogs a couple of km west of the Lagoon. A couple ofTanekaha trees are at 11.16 looking like pine trees on the skyline. The tallest I encountered there was 30m of clear trunk.

Pureroa? Pureora , thanks. The name comes from when Rakataura, the tohunga of the waka,, was travelling and named all the mountains of the Waikato, Pirongia. Kakepuku, Pureora, Te Aroha, Pukeotapu. At Pureora his wife was sick so he did some healing rituals, hence the name Pure Ora (Pure, to recover, Ora = wellbeing, life). . LAter she died at Puke O Kahu. Hill of Kahurere, his wife. The last mountain he named Te Aroha refers to the love for his wife he felt when he could look across the Waikato and see all the peaks he had named after his wife. It was really sad that the summit of Te Aroha has been wrecked by the erection of the TV mast. They wouldn't get away with it today. They also eradicated the northern most population of Mountain Daisy, Celmisia spectabilis.

I was here about 14 years ago is probably one of my favourite walks that we did with the tramping club

Tramped through there in the early 1980's, there is some magnificent rimu forest further up the valley on the hauhungaroa track

work for the old forrest service and we did bird counts b4 and after 1080 drop to see the effect the poison had on the bird numbers ,and then the bird numbers after the possums poisoned ,saw lots of deer pigs dead in the river from the 1080 ,bird numbers dropped away but came back couple of years after the poison drop

Oh boy I remember doing a tramping trip to this hut when I was in Scouts! Good times, thanks for bringing back some memories Peter.
I think we went in via the Waihora track and out via the Waihaha track

I went in there early March, such a cool area. Met some DoC rangers in there that were resetting the trap lines- good buggers and funny too! Im thinking of doing a multi day through the Pureroa Forest sometime soon. Cool vids :)
