Lore goblin here. The Imperium is the way it is because we got screwed over by everything, our advanced  AI betrayed us over 10k years ago (and now we use bits of people's brains for computers and lobotomised criminals turned into cyborgs instead of robots since the computers can't be trusted).
ALL the aliens (xenos) betrayed us after the AI uprising left us weak (humanity never forgave this and have become incredibly xenophobic). After this another alien empire (the eldar or space elves) partied a little too hard they spawned the chaos god of excess (slaanesh), which screwed over the galaxy further (we use the "warp" or space hell to travel faster than light and the birth of slaanesh disrupted warp travel to our colonies).
All this disruption from the birth of a new chaos god caused "psykers" (space wizards with power from the warp) to start being born in these separated colonies. The problem is even trained psykers can be dangerous and if you let them do their thing too long they may be corrupted by the warp and start spawning demons (or just let their power go to their head and start using their freaky mind powers to become tyrants). The result of this was that any colony, that didn't form a culture of repressing or killing psykers, tended to get destroyed by demons (some cultures learnt to use psykers more safely, but it's never 100 percent safe).

The scattered human colonies then got reunited in the 30k setting by the "Emperor of mankind" (an incredibly powerful psyker who is somehow immune to the warp and also a giant demigod like superhuman) Emps created a bunch of super soldiers to take back the galaxy by making 20 "primarch" "sons" who were like him but less glorious and golden, humans upgraded with primarch gene-seed were turned into space marines and fought to conquer the galaxy for humanity until half of them fell to chaos, we had a huge civil war, Emperor nearly got killed and was put on the Golden Throne of Terra (which is keeping him alive and stopping demons from flooding into our homeworld of Terra, while also acting like a lighthouse for our space ships) we gotta sacrifice 1k psykers to his half dead corpse everyday or his light goes out, we'll no longer be able to navigate and the demons will invade.

The Emperor hated all forms of religion (since he thought it empowered the chaos gods) but 10k years later he is now considered "The God Emperor of mankind" And is worshipped by humanity as they desperately fight to not get wiped out by everything from Demons, their worshippers, aliens, undead robot aliens or whatever else that infests our galaxy.

Great, your open the gate.

Have fun

"In the grim darkness of the far future there Is only war" jonh warhammer. Also the 40k part help It to not confuse it with the original Warhammer fantasy battle launched in 1983

"They move slow" was a lie btw.
They run so fast they'd get a ticket on autobahn

First there was the Sea Of Souls, The Old Ones and The Necrontyr. The Sea Of Souls is the place where souls go after their body dies. Think of it as mostly calm with some turbulent areas where all the bad stuff is. It can be harnessed by Psychers. The Old Ones were long lived aliens with a very keen grasp on biology. The Necrontyr were a sickly race at the cusp of fracturing. The Necrontyr asked The Old Ones for technology to heal them. The Old Ones refused. The Necrontyr declared war and lost. They got house arrest on their home planet and found a C'tan feeding on their star. Some sort of Energy Being. The C'tan tricked The Necrontyr to enter Metallic Bodies and at the same time feasted on their souls to become more powerful. Only the most wilful kept their personalities. The Necrons were made and they went for round 2 sparking The War In Heaven.

The Old Ones created The Eldar and The Orks but The C'tan were winning. However not everything was going good in Team C'tan as there was some infighting over who got to eat the souls of the conquered peoples. Lots of people died and The Sea Of Souls started churning into The Warp. The Necrons backstabbed The C'tan and fractured most of them into Shards. Warp creatures killed the last of The Old Ones. The Eldar made a counter-push to which The Necrons nopped out and went into hibernation. The Orks devolved and The Eldar got complacent and murder f*cked a Chaos God into existence which created The Eye of Terror. The Eldar faction that saw this coming survived on giant ships.

Around this time a large group of Shamans got together and ritually committed un-aliving to form 1 being, The Emperor. He subtly guided Humanity from the shadows. Humanity went to the stars, created awesome tech during The Dark Age Of Technology. Including AI. Benevolent and subservient the AI helped Humanity immensely. Humans have souls and developed Psychic powers. All the AI did some calculations and came to the consensus that Humans were going to be Warp corrupted and needed to be exterminated. This is called The Age Of Strife. A lot of people died to AI and Warp corruption. So most high tech was seen as dangerous.

The Emperor had enough and started reunifying Terra by creating The Thunder Warriors. After creating the Primarchs and the actual Space Marines he Old Yellered The Thunder Warriors. The baby Primarchs all are focused on 1 aspect but are good enough at everything else. Guilliman is an Empire builder and leader for example but not the best at dueling or unconventional warfare. The plan was to conquer the galaxy and ban all worship to starve The Chaos Gods. The Chaos Gods abducted all the baby Primarchs and scattered them across the galaxy. This prompted The Unification Wars, a giant crusade to piece everything back. This went very well. So well, in fact, that The Emperor let his sons in charge and went back to Terra for super secret research. This was upsetting to this super sons that thought they were infallible and that their Father trusted them implicitly. Half of them rebelled during the Horus Heresy.

Big E hesitated killing his favourite son and almost died for it. Installed on a Golden Throne that powers this giant beacon in The Warp that all ships navigate by. The Golden Throne keeps him alive by feeding him a lot of Psychers each day but is also slowly killing him. The Loyalist sons fractured their Legions into Chapters. The Primarchs were all lost or disappeared. The Empire fell to worship, administration, mistrust and infighting at the end of 30K. Basically a giant Theocratic Empire with a contradictory byzantine legal system. A ship can take years to travel to the opposite side of the galaxy. And interstellar communication is done through mind images and feelings.

The Necrons are awakening, The Orks are marauding about, Chaos is always trying to conquer the galaxy, a giant hive mind is trying to eat everything, The Eldar are being asshats by throwing Humanity under the bus at every single opportunity. AND The Empire fights itself on a daily basis over petty squabbles.

A lot of the lore I wrote above has all been retconned over the decades. There are a ton of authors and managers, they all want the lore to be a certain way. Not everything is uniform after 100 books, novellas, audiobooks, magazines, codex updates, interviews and random posts that people swear is actual lore. It would not surprise me that people will comment "aksually, you're wrong!".

How to enjoy 40K. It is Fantasy Sci-Fi where everything sucks! There is no good guy. Imagine the most oppressive option a regime might have and they will choose it. Everybody hates each other. There is always war. Indoctrinated super soldiers in giant Power Armour are swinging weapons and magic at each other.

I may have missed some details that are extremely relevant to know. I am sorry, it is 1 AM and I am tired.

Here's the lore, it looks cool, it's violent, it's got big dude's in armor politely informing aliens that they in fact were NOT made in The Emperor's image and they need to suffer dearly for that affront before they're emancipated from their putrid existence, and I think that's fun so I'm pretty much satiated with not knowing anything beyond that.

Update: the Squids have added Necromorphs to their roster.

Chainswords are originally what lumberjacks used during the golden age of humanity but got repurposed as a standard space marine weapon. Very few techs from the golden age survived the 5k years of mad max era across all the surviving human colonies when goon god came.

The "bird chest" guy is Robert Duvall from Apocalypse Now.

10:46 A time period in-universe. The main one, to be specific. Where stuff is currently happening.

In a nutshell Warhammer 40k is a tabletop miniature army game from the 80s that branched into multimedia and it went mainstream about five years ago

There are a lot of good warhammer lore videos out there and I already know that your reactions would be absolutely hilarious.

"Put the lore in the comments." Tippy, sweetie, there is a hard limit to the length and amount of comments YouTube allows on a video. The Lore happily exceeds that by a metric fuckton.

1:12   Oh Tippy, you just open the floodgates 😅😅😅

Lore: Everything sucks, everyone has bulky armor, space orcs.

Tippy's reactions always make these videos feel fresh, even when I've already seen the original.

Felineds (catgirls) are in the lore, but the cucks in controls said they can't leave their planet even though it was a contest that a fan can make a faction.

It's a great game. A call back to simpler times, when games could be just fun games.
