it shouldn't have mattered if there was a ring or not, you let your parents poison your relationship and your future, you let them effect you you could have defended your man at any time. like your dad said relationships take effort where has your effort been?

"they didn't mean to hurt you" but they did and haven't apologized that's the problem, you can hurt someone without meaning to what matters is once you are made aware of the fact it is hurting them you apologize and show with actions that their feelings and they matter. Lack of intent doesn't mean excuse it or down play it there still needs to be an apology and follow through. It starts with sorry but it doesn't just end there

THIS is a SIMPLE TRUTH - if you love and have consideration and respect for the person you are with, you do not do things to upset them or gaslight them - they are your priority and not an ex from the past or some stranger that flirts with you.... if you gaslight them saying they are being insecure or some other BS adjective to hide your disrespect and manipulation then you should not be with them... they deserve better and you need to make better choices that do not include belittling someone you supposedly care about.... you dont care about them..you only care about yourself.
