In today's episode, we'll take a look at the mess kits of soldiers from four major powers: the Wehrmacht, the US Army, the Empire of Japan, and the Red Army. Each introduced its own, often surprising, food systems – from German canned food and portable kitchens, to inventions like instant coffee, through American K-rations, and chocolate bars born of industrial innovation. We'll find raw, minimalist Japanese meals, was sushi among them? Improvised Soviet cauldrons, into which soldiers would toss whatever they happened to find or loot, including from enemy lines.
We'll discuss inventions that were meant to transform soldiers into reliable front-line combat machines, rations that have now become collector's items, and how different nutritional concepts were reflected in military practice. In other words, a table-top history of World War II that rarely makes it to the forefront, but can tell us more about it than many a staff report.
