Nowhere did Hitler spend more time during the Second World War than at the Wolf's Lair, Hitler's headquarters in East Prussia. Sealed off from the outside world and surrounded by leading figures from the Nazi Party and the Wehrmacht, a microcosm of the Nazi regime formed around the dictator. From April 21, 1942, Private Dr. Felix Hartlaub (1913–1945) worked for the War Diary Staff of the High Command of the Wehrmacht in Restricted Zone II of the headquarters. The historian left behind numerous literary sketches, which are among the most spectacular written records from the Führer Headquarters.

In his lecture, Felix Bohr describes life in the bunkers and the increasing chaos within the restricted area of the "Wolf's Lair" Führer Headquarters. From here emanated the orders to accelerate the extermination of European Jews and reduce Europe to rubble. Matthias Weichelt traces the biography of Felix Hartlaub and offers insights into a novel fragment that Hartlaub began immediately after Stauffenberg's assassination attempt on July 20, 1944.
