Chiang Kai-Shek and the Nationalist Government of China. The Chinese nation, as vast as it is ancient, has been the protagonist of great stories throughout its long history. In the 20th century, a decadent China, subject to foreign influence, experienced an internal upheaval that overthrew its imperial dynasty and ushered in a new republican era. This new Republic of China, which ushered in a new period of internal wars, would ultimately have two major protagonists. As supreme leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party, in defense of what he considered the authentic China and its age-old values, one of these two major protagonists was General Chiang Kai-Shek. With an indomitable fighting spirit, Chiang Kai-Shek was the one who managed to reunify that fragmented republican China and govern it for the next 10 years. From his beginnings in the world of Chinese power, Chiang Kai-shek lived through a relentless war on multiple fronts until his final destination: exiled on the island of Taiwan, he consolidated his power in 1950 as president, a position he would hold for the next 24 years of the officially named Republic of China, a state popularly known as Taiwan, whose territory remains disputed to this day. The extraordinary life of Chiang Kai-shek, hero or tyrant according to some, is fundamental to understanding the history of the Asian giant, China. The other protagonist of this 20th-century Republic of China is the communist leader Mao Zedong, with whom our protagonist today will have an existential struggle.
