A force to be reckoned with
Gravity is one of the greatest mysteries of the Universe.
Think you know what gravity is? Think again. A new study shows how little we know about this most mysterious force.

Rumors about something incredible have been circulating for months. Speculation in various circles of scientists around the world has been going on, seemingly without end. And at some point in late 2015, Dr. Ulrich Sperheike, a lecturer in theoretical physics at the Center for Theoretical Cosmology, began to realize that if this were just another test of the equipment, he would have figured it out. Which meant that the rumors that had been circulating in the scientific world had to be true.

“It was like seeing my football team win the FA Cup. And for someone who was watching the change when it happened, it must have been like winning the cup and Wimbledon together! Now I’m more like, ‘Wow. This is a new era in observational physics. Man, how often does that happen?’”

You’re probably wondering what caused this unique excitement? To put it simply, it’s a long, drawn-out sound, similar to the chirp of a cricket. It lasts less than a second and comes from a monitor in Louisiana, followed by another, identical crackle, heard seven milliseconds later in rural Washington.

It’s those twenty milliseconds of data that have allowed scientists around the world, including researchers in Cambridge working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, to listen as two incredibly massive black holes 1.2 billion light-years away spun around each other, accelerating at between 30 and 250 times per second, before colliding to form a single, massive black hole. The impact created a ripple in space-time – or a gravitational wave.
