Today, I’m joined by Dr. Jenn Simmons, who transitioned from breast surgeon to integrative oncologist to better empower her patients to take care of their health. Dr. Jenn believes that if people could shift their thinking to view their cancer as an opportunity to restore health and wellness, we would be much better off.
In this conversation, Dr. Jenn and I discuss her cancer journey, why we need to focus on addressing the underlying causes rather than just managing symptoms, the importance of a holistic approach to cancer care, the role of the immune system, the impact of environmental toxins, the need for supportive relationships, how health coaches can make a vital contribution to a healthcare team, and more.

She also failed to explain that women in their 40s and 50s or older generally have lower risks of developing into invasive cancer. Women who are diagnosed with DCIS in their early ages are more vulnerable.
Furthermore, my doctor never mentioned or gave any suggestion on diet and fasting. When I raised the question her answer was that I could eat whatever I wished. However, my research led me into discovering the important role diet and fasting play in fighting cancer.
I have completely changed my diet and exercised more; I’ve being doing intermittent fasting and got rid of sugar and 95% of carbohydrate; I’m eating 1 - 2 meals a day instead of 3; I’ve changed my bad habit of staying up late; I’m consuming, mostly fresh organic vegetable, fruits, tofu, eggs and meat. I never felt better with my body.
My tumor size was 0.4cm in June, not huge. I plan to get a second opinion and to take another ultrasound or MRI to find out if it grew or shrunk. Then I will be able to make a decision whether to go with the surgery.
DCIS is non-invasive. Statistics shows more than 80% of women never develop into invasive cancer in their lifetime. The traditional medical practice tends to overdiagnose and overt-treat. Before 1980s it was left alone without any treatments.
If I didn’t run my own research, I would have never figured this out. Also, it’s highly annoying that the hospital refused to discuss the cost of the surgery after my repeated requests. Biopsy alone cost over $10,000 and I had to pay $5,000 out of my own pocket! They’ve tried very hard to push me into their program.
