This is achieved through:
* Contrast between light and dark areas.
* The use of transparent color layers (Glazing) in oil painting.
* The use of light, semi-transparent Scumbling layers with opaque or hazy colors over dry layers, allowing parts of the underlying colors to remain visible and creating a sense of atmosphere, glow, and luminous depth.
* Choosing colors with high tonal value in the illuminated areas.
* Controlling color temperature relationships between warm and cool tones.
When these elements work together successfully, the light appears to be an integral part of the paintingโs structure rather than simply a light color placed on its surface.
