In order to get a sales figure chart compilers BARB would survey a limited number of record shops and get a panel sale, in order to account for the shops they missed they would use a multiplier.

They would use a multiplier usually between 10x and 17x (1983 -1990 x17 was used, 1991 x16 and 1991 x15)

As we do not know what multiplier they used in 1979 I have listed to panel sales below it will be up to you to decide what the multiplier should be.

Can't thank you enough for posting this exquisite montage. 👍🏻

What a difference from the top 200 of 1974, It was like people gave up top 40 and finally recognize there was a world of good music out there. Thanks, just love these top 200's. and this was the first i ever heard of Kate Bush EP. special thanks

steveh31 thanks ever so much for putting these up for us all to see. I regret to say that number 199 here is the wrong song. As the text etc show, it should be "Star" by Earth Wind and Fire but you have included "Shining Star" by Earth Wind and Fire, which is actually a completely different song.

Fantastic 👏👏👏 I could listen to these charts all day. Some crackin' tunes in there. 🎵🎙🎶 Thanks for reviving the memories of the brilliant , fab 70's . On now to the awful 80's, but I suppose there were SOME tunes worth listening to. I'm on board for the journey anyway 😂 Fab work compiling these charts. Well done ⭐

Man, I haven't listened to 70s music in year's.
These day's it's just mainly 80s and a sprinkle of 90s.
I grew up listening to 70s music, though.
The 70s were my mum and dads teenage years, so we obviously had lots of 70s (and 60s) records in the house when I was growing up in the 80s.
My mum was into Motown and my dad was into glam rock. Lots of T-Rex, Slade, and such like.

I actually think my parents got married in 79. Either 77 or 79.🤔

Good job, must have taken a lot of work. Not wishing to be critical, but in most lists, Heart of Glass sold more than Bright Eyes (unless some sales were in 1978?), and YMCA sold more than both of them, but that's just the figures.
