Clouds Rest is one of Yosemite National Park’s most incredible hikes, and this one pushed us farther than we expected.
We started before sunrise from the Sunrise Lakes Trailhead along Tioga Road, hitting the trail around 5:50 AM for what would become our longest and most physically demanding hike in Yosemite. Over the next 10.5 hours, we climbed through the forest, crossed high-elevation granite, took in some absolutely incredible views, and eventually made our way onto the exposed ridge of Clouds Rest.
Between the elevation, exhaustion, exposure, and sheer distance, this hike tested us both physically and mentally. We ultimately hiked 12.73 miles before returning to the trailhead a little after 4 PM, completely exhausted but incredibly proud of how far we had gone.
In this video, we’re taking you along for the entire adventure, from the early morning start to the breathtaking views and the moments when Clouds Rest really began pushing us to our limit.
If you’re planning a trip to Yosemite National Park or considering hiking Clouds Rest yourself, we hope our experience gives you a realistic look at just how beautiful, challenging, and unforgettable this trail can be.
Clouds Rest Trail Details:
Distance: 12.6 miles total (out-and-back), 3116 ft of elevation gain
Cloud's Rest, a massive granite formation just northeast of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, is famous for its very high degree of visual prominence in the valley as well as its razor-sharp ridge near the summit. People who have hiked Cloud's Rest are most impressed with the thrilling feeling they have while scrambling up the narrow ridge, with sheer drop-offs on both sides, to the summit. The fastest way to day hike Cloud's Rest starts from the Sunrise Lakes trailhead on Tioga Road near Tenaya Lake.
