On the first day of school, when most students arrived in new clothes and with new school supplies in their backpacks, 15-year-old Robert Gladden Jr. arrived with a bottle of vodka and a disassembled shotgun with 21 shells in his backpack.
The day before, Robert had spent the day at his father's house, as he often did during summer break. There, he slept late and played video games. Before being dropped off at his mother's, Robert disassembled his father's shotgun to take with him.
That same evening, he sent messages to his friends:
"I'm going to take a shotgun and 21 rounds of ammunition. I'll leave the rest to your imagination, and I trust you won't tell anyone about this. So please don't."
"I'll either go straight to Mrs. Blake's room, or I'll wait until lunch and just shoot everyone LOL."
But at the time, his friends didn't take these messages seriously and didn't tell anyone. On Facebook, Bobby also called himself "Sui#idleSmile."
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine killers, were listed as inspirational figures.
A few hours before going to school, Robert wrote:
"First day of school, last day of my life. Screw the world."
On the morning of August 27, 2012, Robert attended his first two classes at Perry Hall School, then went to the school bathroom during recess, where he assembled a shotgun he'd taken from his father's house and loaded it.
Hiding the shotgun under his T-shirt, he entered the school cafeteria. There, he pulled out the gun and shot Daniel Borrowy, a student with Down syndrome, in the back. Teachers then attacked Robert and managed to disarm him.
