British Airways has just announced some BIG changes — and in this video I take a closer look at what they actually mean for BA passengers and the future of the airline’s A380 fleet.
The Airbus A380 is finally getting the transformation we’ve been waiting for. BA is planning a major nose-to-tail rebuild of its superjumbos, introducing the new First suite, Club Suite and completely refreshed World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins. The new configuration will feature 12 First, 106 Club World, 84 World Traveller Plus and 215 World Traveller seats, with Club World taking over the entire upper deck.
But today’s announcement goes much further than the aircraft itself.
I look at the changes being made to the wider First experience, including new bedding, sleepwear, amenity kits, tableware and other onboard details, as BA attempts to create a much more consistent premium product.
There are also significant developments on the ground at Heathrow, including plans for a new Terminal 5 C Gates lounge, changes to the Arrivals lounge and a new First experience at Terminal 3 alongside American Airlines. BA says the wider programme will ultimately see its Heathrow lounges redesigned.
And, of course, there is a major operational question behind all this: what does the refurbishment programme mean for A380 availability? With 12 aircraft in the fleet and an intensive modification programme to accommodate, keeping enough A380s available for the published flying programme is going to be an important part of the story. BA’s A380 flying is already being reduced this winter as the overhaul gets under way.
In this video I separate the announcement from the marketing, look at what is genuinely changing, and consider what it means for BA customers and for the future of one of the most distinctive aircraft in the British Airways fleet.
What do you think? Is this the transformation the BA A380 desperately needed? And does the scale of the investment finally put to bed any lingering doubts about the aircraft’s future at British Airways?
