:_eatsHello: Which terrible Japanese T-shirt was your favorite??

@Capohanf1 1 year ago

My favorite Tee shirt has "Yes I Am" printed on the front and "NO I Am NOT" printed on the back.

I'm an American studying in Shibuya, and there's kind of a game with my classmate where I wear nonsense Japanese shirt from America to make them smile, and they ask me what the nonsense English on their shirts means. It`s a good laugh all around.

The oppai shirt was made famous in the anime One Punch Man. The main character wore that shirt.

IN defense of the guy with the "squid" on the shirt. If i remember Squid is connotative to "useless". And having "useless" on a t-shirt sounds pretty intentional funny to me.

When I was a kid in high school in 80s, an Japanese stuff "motif" somehow became randomly cool, the class burnout kid, who was always trying to be tough an edgy, had a shirt with Japanese Kanji on it, that was supposed to be tough, and threatening, he claimed. Later in the year, we got a Japanese as an exchange student. She read his "tough, cool" t-shirt to him. It said "let's go to library."

He never wore it to class again.

It was about 2008, and I was in a sad mood in Yokohama, Japan. Then I saw a man wearing a T-shirt that said in English, "Stop Jiggling Your Knees!" I couldn't stop giggling.

When I went to high school (US), everyone knew what "oppai" meant. Every. One. Or, at least, every student. When they wore shirts with that term on them, they knew what they were wearing. They just thought it was funny. I don't think the teachers knew what the shirts or terms meant, which is why the boys enjoyed it so much and also got away with it.

As an American who learned Japanese as a second language, I can confirm that I always have trouble remembering which is ソ / ン and ツ / シ

"Love at first squat" = cleaning coffee off my monitor. ;)

The Japanese words on the Superdry t-shirt is actually done on purpose as a reverse parody of t-shirts with poorly translated English. It's meant to be like Nike's "Just do it" but in fake Japanese.

15:00. On many packages of fish, they will say “caught in deep ocean.” This shirt is trying to be funny, and say that the person wearing the shirt was caught in the USA (a real American)

9:35 when you’re a polyglot but you also want to make money on people who don’t bother checking the translation

A friend of mine got a t-shirt written "niku" over a steak and underneath "just do eat" a provocation to Nike ("niku" in Japanese means meat). She thought it was a bit strange, so she only wears the shirt at home

The Fonzie shirt is 100% ironic / lame on purpose.

"Hello, I am Mr. Gentleman." is my main pickup line.

The SpongeBob one feels like an intentional joke. Like, "if ya know, ya know." There's a lot of jokes like that in ケロロ軍曹.

My Japanese history professor in college (an American who spent many years in Japan) occasionally told stories of mistaken English found in Japan. One of the stories was his seeing an elderly woman on the Tokyo subway carrying a bag marked "Funky Babe."

After suppressing a laugh, he apologized and explained the incongruity of the slogan.
