Dean Martin's drunk act was just that. An act just like it was on his own show.

I read somewhere that Foster Brooks didn't drink alcohol that was.part of his act especially on Dean Martin's roasts.

Deans drunkardness was an act. Everybody in show biz knew it. When Sinatra and the Rat pack stayed in the casino after their act into the night to drink and smoke, and carry on, Dean would excuse himself before 11 pm to be home with his family

I think some of the funniest shows Carson had was when Rickles performed and when people were seemingly drunk. The facial expressions by Carson here are priceless.
The guests are open and you wait for their responses to the questions. That's when we laugh

Very insightful. Johnny Carson, with all of his faults, was the quintessential Libra diplomat. He navigated those drunken seas and sailors with good grace. Mercy on us all.

I knew Dean Martin when I was a little kid. He barely drank at all. It was an act.

I knew a guy that knew Dean Martin and told me Dean didn't drink much, it was an act, maybe he had one to calm his nerves, but the way he sang sounded drunk and people laughed, so he stuck with it, my dad got a kick out of him, and my dad didn't laugh much!😂

Dean Martin’s "drunk" persona was a carefully crafted act, not reality. While famously holding a glass of liquor on stage, he typically drank apple juice and was often sober, using the persona to make his performances appear casually charming. He was known for being a disciplined, early-to-bed performer.
