You touched on an issue that has been on my mind lately as a novice long-range shooter: the flow of information during long-distance shooting. So far, I haven't been able to find other YouTube videos that address this problem, specifically how to organize the workflow of all these support tools into one efficient and ergonomic setup.
There are plenty of "how-to" videos for each individual device, but very few people show how to combine them into a single integrated system, as you describe. Thank you, it was very inspiring.
I’m very well versed with the Calypso and it really is a game changer. Especially when you’re running it in north direction of fire mode that allows Quantom to read live wind at multiple targets with different azimuth’s. Calypso and Applied Ballistics not finding a common ground to work together is a huge disservice to the community. Thankfully the AB mini will still work but if that were to break that would suck. AB either needs to open up their app or kestrel or someone needs to come back with a wind meter like calypso and solve this issue.
I just got on my because I wanted to see if they had the new smk 107 polymer tip bullet in there and it wants me to update firmware. But it gets to 2° and just freeze
I also love AB elite in LRF binos. Such an incredible combination. I have also found the AB solutions to be the most often successful of the solvers. I can't say that I know much more of the behind the scenes stuff than you do though I did recently speak to a calypso rep about the discontinuation of the AB model. They seemed open to the new model (which they are making open to work with anyone's software) working in the AB ecosystem though I have no idea if AB is interested. The communications interface between the Calypso and AB seems to have been a rocky road. It took a long time and several software updates for the unit I have to be able to interface at all. I think it was at least a year after they released the device to the public before I was able to get it to work. Even now that the devices connect OK, I wish the software implementation was more robust. Having the range card update all the windage values for instance. Or, being able to set a persistent direction of orientation for the wind meter that then interfaces automatically with the compass readings from the binos so that you can range different directions without re-orienting the wind meter would also be great. I love the tech and think it could be the best wind implementation by far but the software integration is not what it should be. It feels very much like the communication between AB and Calypso was also never what it should have been.
Can you imagine being a sniper and having them deploy a lot of them linked dropped from a plane for you so you can gather wind and elevation data realayong it real time across a full field of view with on demand live adjustments
I currently use the QuickDOPE ballistic app and it is by far my favorite up until recently I was able to use the AB mini and now it is no longer able to connect with it. This is an issue on applied ballistic side, not Calypso or QuickDOPE. It’s unfortunate, but I will be selling my mini soon because I don’t believe in gatekeeping information or technology even though I understand it was probably a business decision.
On another note, I’ve recently found your channel and I love the vibes and information you bring to the table
I’m hopeful that we can have a swarm of 6 mini drones that set themselves offsets and parallel to the bullet trajectory so we have real wind values real time along the entire flight path. I do t think it’s far out.
Have you tried QuickDope with the Calypso and Kestrel? The Kestrel grabs environmental information. The Calypso gets the wind. QuickDope also has a bunch of options for connecting to different devices. The only issue is that QuickDope had to drop the Calypso Mini AB from their support (I assume something to do with AB). However, all other Calypso devices still work. I'm only about halfway through the video, so maybe you talk about it. But just what I was thinking while watching.
I have noticed this issue as well and the mind boggling thing to me is that once you have these embedded microcontroller systems that have bluetooth connectivity... companies like calypso are very open and transparent for 3rd party developers. It is wide open for anyone to come add in the functionality. It got frustrating enough that I have picked up this as a personal project to build my own weapon mounted LRF that integrates the AB mini or just the Calypso mini wind meter (same thing without the AB connectivity). All the other environmentals and other sensors (roll, pitch, gps, direction of aim etc.) Will be onboard. I have not looked into Kestrel or the other systems out there like the new vortex wind unit, but I am happy to integrate all of those units if they are open to 3rd party developers using the data those things put out wirelessly.
Started with an arduino dev board just as a proof of concept (got all the sensors and an LRF module working), have moved onto a Nordic micro controller dev board for the actual real time operating system and ballistic solver integration. Probably wont have anything mounted to a rifle for about a year, but the dev part of the electronics is underway.
I am genuinely shocked that no one else has done this yet. There has to be some kind of business opportunity that everyone making weapon mounted LRF's thinks they are going to do the Vortex thing and make their own full ecosystem.
